In case you missed it from Pet Chat and TFB. A month and a bit ago we noticed that Bunsen’s right side of his upper head was super boney -almost like it was caving in. Bernoulli had just arrived and we got Bunsen into the vet ASAP. It actually was at the same time Bernoulli got his first shots. The vet did an exam and concluded that yes, his muscle loss was very worrisome and we needed to get to the bottom of it. She said it could be one of three things- all of which would require a CAT scan and bloodwork to confirm or rule out (which we were happy to do as we have been saving money every month for health care). We waited with a great deal of stress until his CAT scan day as it would probably confirm or rule out cancer - and the cancer that would cause his face to atrophy isn’t the type of cancer you treat. June was a month of joy with Bernoulli- and stress from the end of the year for us as teachers- but also so much worry for our big guy that we love so much. The day of his CAT scan was actually the day of Kris’ schools grad and she had to package in a box her worry and stress and be there for her students - I was tasked with the day. They knocked Bunsen out to take the scan and a couple hours later I picked him and waited in the vet room for his results. I’m not going to lie- I shed some tears into his fur. Luckily, the CAT scan ruled out cancer! So after that news was given I could focus a bit more on the data the vet showed and from a purely objective view point it was so interesting! His skull look so unlike his happy face, and we zoomed through his brain to his nose. It appears that he may have two diseased teeth that may have been causing his pain for months- leading to him not eating on that side. We do have to wait for his bloodwork Wednesday. In closing, we didn’t want to tell anyone until we knew the news ourselves and to remind everyone that pet ownership is through sickness and health. The CAT scan and bloodwork was something we could afford and it may lead to other costly procedures or medications. Please remember this when you are thinking of adding a pet to your life. We will update everyone once we hear back about the bloodwork later next week. Oh, the big guy did great and he was super charming with all the vet staff so they are rooting for him too!
