@pickover Gary 10 and Joan 14 by solving 2 simultaneous equations with 2 variables, unless it's a definition trap because "lifelike" and neither of them own any "real" shrunken heads, and then 2 =-2 and -4=2 simultaneously which isn't any algebraic system I grok.

Mathematics. Shrunken heads puzzle. (Although some of you will say this is too "easy," what percentage of people on planet Earth could answer such a strange question? Does the problem even have a unique solution?) P.S. Many of these puzzles come from my various books.

@NickFromCyprus @pickover Right, how could the problem be visualized, intuited? That's what fascinates me about people with great mathematical minds/insights...how do they see/know what they do, even before they can express it logically or in an equation?

@pickover Or more generally: When is the result of adding two numbers the same as multiplying them? When does A + B = A x B ? It's when the flat plane of Y = A + B intersects the saddle of Y = A x B. This forms a hyperbola:

@pickover -1! Ha ha! I laugh at the people who told me algebra would never have any real world usefulness, because here I am with a correct answer! (Simple, but still fun) (Useful is in the eye of the beholder...math gives me joy, so q.e.d.)

@KH2020H0 The square root of 5^32 is 5^16, the square root of which is 5^8, the square root of which is 5^4, the square root of which is 5^2, which is 25.
