On this day, May 13th 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fátima, Portugal. Dressed in white and brighter than the sun, she called them to Pray the Rosary daily for peace in the world and the conversion of sinners.

Nolan Ryan was a great pitcher, a Hall of Famer who was incredibly durable, and is the MLB career leader in several pitching categories. But few, if any, MLB fans would ever call him the best pitcher of all-time. That's who LeBron is. He's the Nolan Ryan of the NBA. Michael Jordan is the Tom Seaver / Sandy Koufax of the NBA.

@MarkCHealey You wouldn’t ask your CPA to fix your plumbing. You wouldn’t ask the plumber to handle your home’s electrical work. You wouldn’t pay your attorney to paint the house. Not all roles are interchangeable for competence and value, on the field or off. Huge disappointment.

My biggest issue with the analytics approach to baseball is that players are considered assets and interchangeable because of past statistics and projections, with little to no regard for the players’ intangibles.

While I appreciate the “hustle” by companies (and the algorithm) sending me unsolicited social media ads for restorative beef tallow, hair growth, Italian eye serum and turkey neck solutions, it’s making me a bit self-conscious. I do own mirrors and I’m OK with aging gracefully.

@KevG163 As a young Vikings fan, Joe Senser was the first tight end I recall as more of a receiver than blocker. Dave Caspar was there for a short time, Bob Tucker and Stu Voight had their productive moments, but Senser opened the offense and led the way to the great Steve Jordan. #RIP

RIP Joe Senser 🕯️ #Vikings Tight End Joe earned Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro honors in 1981, leading all NFC tight ends in receptions (79), receiving yards (1,004), and receiving touchdowns (8). The only Vikings tight end with 1,000 receiving yards in a season #Skol

@MarkCHealey Maybe Stearns should fall on his sword and resign if things don’t turn around by June 1. Apologize to fans, take full responsibility for overvaluing analytics to construct a winning roster. Show naked accountability for exhibiting hubris as a substitute for baseball wisdom.

If you believe that Carlos Mendoza makes the lineup and is primarily responsible for the pitching moves that take place during the game, then yes, he should be fired. If you believe that Mendoza is simply a middle manager who is handed the lineup and pitching assignments for the day, one could argue that he is only partially responsible for the team's performance over the last 100 or so games. However, you could also make the argument that he still should be fired, because he's not pushing back on data he may not fully support or embrace. Either way, the situation is a total mess. The "vote of confidence" delivered via a story by MLB.com was IMO, a weak attempt to avoid media scrutiny. Carlos Mendoza faces the media several times a day and has to stand there and take all sorts of questions about roster construction, pitching moves, and lineup decisions, etc. As of May 8, David Stearns has constructed one of the worst teams in Mets history, both in performance and value, and should be the one in front of the cameras. Maybe he should just fire Mendoza, if for no other reason than to spare him the indignity of having to defend the ridiculous roster he has been handed.

I never liked Star Wars. Didn’t watch the original (1977) as a child or any of its sequels until well after graduating college. No interest in any of the “newer” movies or TV series. Just doesn’t appeal to me. #UnpopularOpinion

We've got 25 days until Memorial Day. The #Mets will play 23 games over that span. If this team is going to get itself right, this is the time to do so. Otherwise, it's going to be a long summer.

@MarkCHealey Time for change. New manager, new approach. Strict meritocracy on playing time. Every player must earn a spot in the lineup and on the roster. The front office has failed, and the players have severely underperformed in April. Accountability and winning matters. #YaGottaBelieve

@MarkCHealey It was more understandable when the starting lineup featured Bruce Boisclair, Frank Taveras and Jose Cardenal. Yes, simply embarrassing. Gut check for all players on the team and for the front office. Find that winning spirit and sense of urgency again. Play with pride.

@MarkCHealey You have to hit the bottom to bounce back up. This goes for the team and individual players. Baty seems like a smart, determined kid. He’ll grow from this experience. I like him and think he should be the primary 3B to improve focus. Bichette can DH, which should help him, too.

@MarkCHealey If by June 15 this team is still at or below .500, I would expect serious changes to occur, including firings. The process has a deadline. If Lindor remains in a stupor and the team fails to win consistently when Soto returns, it will be an ugly summer in Queens.

Watching last night's #Mets game, I came to a few conclusions: I don't believe Carlos Mendoza will be fired anytime soon. If he were, it would reflect poorly on David Stearns' strategy, spanning from the end of last season to the Mets' current situation. I don't anticipate this happening. While a change is possible, I doubt that Kai Correa or Gilbert Gomez stepping in would significantly alter the team's trajectory at this point. Carlos Beltrán is a potential name, but I find it unlikely the Mets would make that kind of mid-season move, especially with his impending Hall of Fame induction. The primary problem is the offense. Interestingly, there has been silence from the usual critics regarding the Director of Hitting (a ridiculous title), Jeff Albert, who was hired to "oversee the team's entire offensive program," and his assistant, Troy Snitker. Whatever this duo is implementing isn't working. Perhaps this is the reason for the JD Martinez move? Maybe the intensified reliance on analytics for the hitting philosophy was a misstep? Those questions might infuriate the people who "trust the process," but the results don't lie. Terrible at-bats, no deep counts, and an entire lineup that seems overmatched every game. Despite this frustration and current losing streak, it is simply too early in the season for me to think that Staerns will consider a drastic measure like firing the manager, who just a few months ago survived his purge of the coaching staff. See you all later tonight.

@MetsSouthFla Not necessarily the same for Alonso, but I recall George Foster losing bat speed with the Mets. Once one of the most feared sluggers in MLB, he started hitting sky-high popups and striking out more because he was guessing on pitches. It happens with age to the best players.

For those who still can’t understand why the Mets, or any other team besides the Orioles, offered Pete a 5 yr deal, this is why. Once a player looses bat speed, especially a power hitter, they regress rapidly. Teams have to look at this stuff for any player when making decisions. Plus Pete being the lowest ranked 1B last yr hurts. Sports is cruel at times, it’s why the best of the best only have 5-6 prime yrs. Age hits quicker with most athletes.
I Like Numbers@i_numbers82778

15 largest YoY declines in bat speed so far. Alonso’s might be the most concerning. 75.7 in 2023, 75.2 in 2024, 75.3 in 2025, and 72.5 so far this year

@MarkCHealey Worrying about the Mets is futile. As a lifelong fan, I cheer them and keep the frustration on the side as "seasoning"... No use getting upset with the day-to-day results (though I try to watch most games). Amid the highs and lows, there is only one constant: #YaGottaBelieve

If I’ve learned anything watching the New York Mets since 1976 is that nothing ever comes easy. Even 1986 the most dominant regular season the Mets ever had, the playoffs with Houston and the Red Sox were excruciating. This is the path we have chosen .
