@JonathanSarfat2 @EmRoman74 @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack No it's nothing of the sort, the plague increased wages, it was horrid but ultimately was a good thing over several centuries with many other things. How dare you twist that into a holocaust comparison.
English

@medieval_rat @EmRoman74 @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack Rather like saying that the Holocaust was the best thing to happen to the Jews.
English

𝐄𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐈𝐈𝐈 was the greatest king of England!

> Defeated the Scots at Hallidon Hill and created the dismounted men-at-arms & longbowmen tactics used later on.
> Destroyed the French fleet in daring raids and at Sluys to ensure the war ensuing would take place in France.
> Ruled for 50 years of internal peace
> Defeated the French at Sluys, Crécy wnd Calais and the Spanish at Winchelsea.
> Captured Calais after a year long siege and famously spared the citizens at the behest of his Queen.
> When he heard the French were trying to bribe their way into Calais he and a small force snuck in disguised as ordinary knights to ‘prepare a crafty welcome for the French’.
> Battered Eustace de Ribemont trying to sneak Calais and rewarded him with his freedom and a chaplet of pearls as a gift.

> When deadly plague struck he did his best to show his people that he would not be perturbed and continued to hold tournaments.
> Instituted legal reforms and under his reign the term ‘due process’ was used for the first time in legislation.

@MichalYouDoing @EmRoman74 @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack You can't turn a blind eye to locking Galileo up, and the shoulders Newton stood on were those of Robert Hooke.
England as a protestant nation had more intellectual freedom than the Catholic papal states.
English

There was no "lack of enlightenment" in the Papal States, Galileo affair notwithstanding. The Catholic Church were funding the majority of the world's science at the time. Most of the necessary experiments towards heliocentrism were funded and ran there. Newton made no known telescopic observations of his own, very clearly "standing on the shoulders of giants".
England had its own restrictions. Catholics were not allowed at universities. Academics tried to force Newton to take orders, which he got out of on a technicality of the Lucasian chair, which was fortunate, as his Theology would have otherwise got him in trouble.

@EmRoman74 @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack One of the reasons for the Peasants revolt. Workers demanded more so they tried to claw it back through poll taxes.
Can just see a medieval plumber shaking his head.. You've had the right Flemish in here haven't you?
English

@medieval_rat @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack I wonder if the tradesman after the plague were like plumbers and the like now knowing they could start charging more because the workforce was thinned out?
Sucking air through their 3 teeth when pricing up a job.
English

@EmRoman74 @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack Clergy disproportionately affected as they stayed to help the sick. That and the printing press at the same time really loosened the grip of the church.
Took a couple of hundred years ( and Henry VIII) but we had an Enlightenment whilst they were locking up Galileo.
English

@EmRoman74 @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack Shave a chicken and strap it to the boil.
Good old cure that.
I still maintain the plague was the best thing to happen to England
English

@medieval_rat @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack You can’t let a little thing like the plague stop the show.
English

@EmRoman74 @nonregemesse @HistoriaJack The "Holding tourneys during plague" was maybe not the best idea with hindsight. If only his son had lived.
English

@chrisjonespress Based on an actual incident although it was an Israeli officer who went surfing during one of the many conflicts.

RIP Robert Duvall (1931-2026) Robert Duvall is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors of all time. His contribution to Cinema is immense. He was a part of one of the most important periods of American Cinema & featured in many of the masterpieces, with "Apocalypse Now" (1979, Coppola) being one of them. This is one of the most iconic lines in the History of Cinema. He will be missed by all.
