@cafreiman Almost all of the charts and graphs you post daily are meant to demonstrate the accomplishments of free market capitalism, and yet they are in fact demonstrations of the achievements made by social democratic capitalist systems of the type Mamdani is implementing.

On the NYC budget: Remember that Thatcher said that the problem with socialism is that you *eventually* run out of other people’s money, not that you immediately run out of other people’s money.

Yes, the culprit here - and in every financial crisis since the 1980s - is the liberalization of capital flows and the deregulation of finance. Bottling up this stuff was crucial to making the 30 golden years work.
John Maynard James Keynesan 🇺🇦 🇵🇸@jjl8813

Yes quite frustrating people praise “capitalism” for the great 30 years post WW2 then blame its “socialism” for the 90s crash (which came after neoliberal reforms) and in reality Sweden has always been a social democracy. Which is ultimately capitalist and Sweden always been.

@RichardHanania Reminder: whenever socialists pointed out that Sweden etc were clear examples where socialist ideals were hugely successful, the reply was always “they’re capitalist!” Apparently they aren’t unless they tear down the very systems that made Nordic countries the happiest on earth.

Sweden is choosing capitalism. Social spending as percentage of GDP is now 24%, lower than most of Northern Europe. Sweden has surpassed the US in billionaires per capita. School choice is universal, one in ten teens goes to a school operated by a company listed on the Stockholm stock exchange. Taxes have been cut three years in a row. Sweden has seen "more than 500 initial public offerings over the 10 years through 2024, more than Germany, France, the Netherlands and Spain combined" Nearly half of primary healthcare clinics are now privately owned. The result? Same as always. Sweden is projected to grow 2% a year through 2030, which is the same as the US and double France and Germany. How many times does this have to keep happening across the world? How many times does free market capitalism have to prove itself superior to socialism before the world accepts the truth?

Have you played Monopoly? That is a Free Market system. How long does it take one person to bankrupt all the other players and end up with everything, a monopoly. I would say Ayn Rand was stupid, but she wasn't she just repeated the same lies that have been going for 200 years

@cafreiman All of these posts miss the main purpose of taxing billionaires, which is fundamentally about reducing inequality and keeping large fortunes from translating into political power. It has nothing to do with funding the government, which currency issuers do not require.

This generated some outraged responses, so to clarify: Humans clearly have the most general intelligence we've seen to date. I'm just not convinced that what we have reaches a bar of 100% general cognition. It's plausible that some future being will consider itself to have the first true general intelligence, and see humans as having a hodge podge of narrower cognitive capabilities. It's also plausible that there's no actual upper bound on "generality" of intelligence, and that it's turtles all the way down.
Ramez Naam@ramez

It's not at all clear to me that humans possess this thing called "general intelligence". It seems unlikely that we do.

I have said it earlier and I am saying it again, if there is one man who must be taught the difference between household finances and the finances of a currency-issuing government, it is Elon Musk. He is one hundred percent wrong about the US government finances, all he does is repeat mainstream economics crap and spread fear-mongering. The US government can survive any level of debt and deficit so long as it is denominated in US dollars. Zero financial risk whatsoever!
ALUTHEDON@Mbakaza4L

And there it is. Elon Musk just said he wants to cut Social Security and Medicare, calling them “entitlements”: “That’s the big one to eliminate.”
