@matthew_loftus Well - can we point to any government that has ushered in peace and understanding with Hellfires and JDAMs in the past say 40 years?

okay everything else aside can we all agree that this is at the very least a really awkward way of phrasing things? in no small part because it could give someone the impression that pacifism is the only morally licit option for Christians.
Pope Leo XIV@Pontifex

God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs. Military action will not create space for freedom or times of #Peace, which comes only from the patient promotion of coexistence and dialogue among peoples.

@BruckbauerMark @PatriciaHeaton And if God were to tell you to sacrifice your only son you might do it - but God has not told anyone to exterminate Iranian or Lebanese or Syrian etc. people.

@PatriciaHeaton Excellent point, Patricia. Additionally, the Old Testament is full of examples of God ordering His prophets, kings and people to wage war on adversaries.

Yes, Yes, Yes…and Why do we say this wonderful prayer?? 🙏 Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and all of the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

@Marnie_Mac_ @kevinvdahlgren OK - but I had friends who lived on Alberta (working for a Catholic charity) - never heard or saw a thing. Portland was a paradise then compared to know.

@mes06801 @kevinvdahlgren Incorrect. Portland was a hotspot for crips and bloods in the 80s because people would send their gangbangin’ kids up here from LA to stay w/family, get them out of the lifestyle. Tons of shootings and deaths. N/NE

I met an old-school Blood sleeping on the street. In the 1980s, Bloods and Crips were everywhere. The streets were violent, unpredictable. I remember having a teacher who warned all the white students to avoid certain parts of Portland altogether. Eventually, law enforcement cracked down. The gangs faded, at least from public view. The violence didn’t look the same anymore. But the story didn’t end. Decades later, I found one of those men someone who lived through that era sleeping on the sidewalk. Older now. Worn down. Still carrying the history of a time when he was part of something feared.

@MZHemingway @BecketAdams Possibly the Pope knows more about just war theory and morality than Mr. Vance - who admittedly is in a horrible position trying to support the latest assassinations and bombings.

@BecketAdams But JD specifically talked about Just War theory and how the pope's "there can never be conflict that is justified" was at odds with that.

Islam doesn't believe that Jesus is the Son of God, nor that Mary is the Mother of God Islam's denial makes their understanding of the Blessed Virgin Mary incompatible with Catholic Marian doctrine How can their be communion between Islam and Christianity on this? Doesn't make any sense
Pope Leo XIV@Pontifex

Communion between Christians and Muslims takes shape under the mantle of Our Lady of Africa. Here, in #Algeria, the maternal love of Lalla Meryem gathers everyone as children, within our rich diversity, in our shared aspiration for dignity, love, justice, and peace. In a world where division and wars sow pain and death, living in unity and peace is a compelling sign. #ApostolicJourney

@RudyHavenstein They ought to tell kids that they are just teaching them a "trick". Start with counting from seven up 4 numbers. Use your fingers if you need to. Move on from there. Then tell them it is not a trick - it is an algorithm.

I was trying to help a 1st grader with simple math homework and apparently the way they teach it now is batshit crazy. 7+4? 11, right? You learn that once & you're good for life. But Nooooo. You have little boxes and you round to 10 and conjure a Loa or something to get the answer. WTF? Anyway, I've been asked not to help with math homework in the future.

@RudyHavenstein @federalreserve If you use common core math it looks a lot better.

@TRHLofficial Well...Mohamedanism is a post Christian heresy. Like Lutheranism or Calvinism. Is anyone bothered by the Pope's failure to ask Italy to burn a few Calvinists this week?

So, you know the Nostra Aetate document from Vatican II that rejects antisemitism? Well, in the previous paragraph it addresses Muslim relations, and Pope Leo’s interfaith visit today is standard almsgiving. Can we finally have that Vatican II discussion now, or nah.

Even if you despise Eric Swalwell, this warp-speed defenestration is an insane precedent. Campaign implodes, mass disavowal, criminal probe, has to resign under threat of *expulsion* -- all for what seemingly boils down to some hookups/flings/flirtations with consenting adults!

Lord, have mercy... "But all the blasphemous stuff is just a joke!" Here's what CS Lewis wisely observed about that via the demon Screwtape: "Cruelty is shameful — unless the cruel man can represent it as a practical joke. A thousand bawdy, or even blasphemous, jokes do not help towards a man's damnation so much as his discovery that almost anything he wants to do can be done, not only without the disapproval but with the admiration of his fellows, if only it can get itself treated as a Joke."

Pope Benedict XVI gave an interview to German journalists shortly after his election. One of the things he talked about was ‘unity in diversity.’ He meant that while there is one overarching church, the various nations are unique and express the faith in their own way. Implicit in that is that the various nations are worth preserving. I don’t understand why these bishops cannot advocate charity for the poor without actually importing tens of thousands of people that threaten national integrity and generate social problems. Unless they really do just want to import Catholics because they see shrinking congregations.
60 Minutes@60Minutes

Pope Leo will spend July 4 in Lampedusa, an Italian island in the Mediterranean, where tens of thousands of migrants land on their way to Europe every year. It also marks America's 250th birthday. U.S. cardinals say the visit sends a message. cbsn.ws/4taRe3E

No… capitalism didn’t slash poverty to 10% Socialist movements within capitalism achieved: Minimum wage The National Health Service Unemployment benefits Worker safety laws The weekend Pensions Free education Paid holidays Sick pay Maternity leave Trade union rights Child labour laws Public housing All of which reduced poverty that socialists had to fight tooth and nail for against the capitalist classes to achieve
𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐠@CasuallyGreg

Demanding capitalism deliver a 0% poverty rate is peak stupidity. Before markets, extreme poverty was ~90% in 1820. Capitalism slashed it to under 10% today, lifting billions. No system has done better. Zero poverty is a utopian fantasy ignoring human nature & incentives.
