Needle felting, my new hobby for relaxing after 55 min of Editorial Manager paper submission wrangling. The eye was particularly soothing/disturbing.

@FromPhDtoLife Check what’s out there! We’re so good at doing research, just not when it comes to career opportunities! Stroll the internet or LinkedIn for different opportunities, read job ads, join seminars, alumni & career events, ask people what they do…you can learn so much by this.

academia attracts so many brilliant yet deeply wounded people. i wish we as a profession didn't enable & encourage their toxic behavior. theory can't heal, nor external validation. i hate how the study of so much i find beautiful is done by people who hurt others so much.

@metabolady when i say it's not validated, i mean it has been tested for diagnostic accuracy, but it doesn't perform well. i can recommend some articles if you want to read up and are interested

I sometimes get queries about whether fructosamine can be used to diagnosis type 2 diabetes, when HbA1c is invalid (eg because of an Hb Variant). why would you do a fructosamine & not a fasting glucose? sometimes i am too close to a topic & lose perspective - what am i missing?

@ShivaniM_KC I see. Well yes, I agree, it’s a less stable surrogate than A1c, but still more stable than fasting glucose itself from what I understand. And it’s not validated for diagnosis, true, but so was A1c before validation was done. So no current solution, but maybe for the future?

@metabolady oh so many reasons its predominantly influenced by glycated albumin and albumin is an acute phase response protein so levels easily perturbed it only reflects about 28 days so more variable not validated for diagnosis etc basically a less stable surrogate than hba1c

@metabolady all true but it can't be used for diagnosis - the tweet is about diagnosis
