This shit is cool and I see the potential in it, but I don’t think it serves well as an actual PILOT.
I want to know who these characters are, what their goals are, and what their struggles are!! I feel like I got none of that!

the art direction has a ton of charm, but the plot and characters aren't very interesting. what is Planetronika even about? it's just a bunch of things happening. like i get it's a concept pilot, but a pilot is supposed to hook us on an entertaining episodic format. this doesn't.

The ‘Planetronika’ pilot just launched on youtube. Link in the comments. It is based on the 2000s attempt to replicate anime style animation similar to Teen Titans and Avatar the Last Airbender.

My opinion on the pilot aside, the common, "nothing happens though", criticism feels to me like its only popular NOWADAYS because people want to feel smart ANALYZING things. It used to be normal to just like things for their art. Personally I blame the rise of video essays.

@knifeheadedd @Gerudo_King07 @chubshrub I dropped the series after S1E6, so that might be why. I didn’t find those episodes too distinct from what the pilot. It just stuck out in my mind as an effective pilot in its own right when I first watched it.

@Capt_Patavius @chubshrub I need substance if the creator wants me to latch onto their ideas. Is it about anything? Is there a theme? No. So is there a compelling plot? Does it have unique comedy? No. So are there endearing characters? Not really. Besides style, it fails to deliver on what i’m looking for

@CaptStarr01 @chubshrub Slice of Life shows are entertaining largely because of good character work. Planetronika’s characters from what we’ve seen aren’t very interesting, so it’s hard to attach and relate to them. You can only get so far when the pilot is about a bouncing ball

@metalsentry @chubshrub I feel like that’s subjective tho to the individual. I don’t see how that makes it shallow tho. That’s like saying most slice of life shows are shallow which couldn’t be farther from the truth. This is probably a low key chill premise like Hey Arnold or Doug

@Gerudo_King07 @chubshrub It was probably easier to make the pilot like this than to do the space exploration stuff. Then again, if that’s the real idea, I’d rather have seen that. Hopefully they can show more of what Planetronika can really be now that demand is really showing.

@metalsentry @chubshrub Personally, I saw it as a way to experiment with character quirks like the liquid body of the slime guy. There are scifi elements and a space theme that leads me to believe theyre gonna be an episodic tag team adventure duo. But it’s just a proof of concept. Story can come later

@Gerudo_King07 @chubshrub The problem is that, other than the artstyle, I don’t know what the creator is going for. What is Planetronika about? The pilot doesn’t tell me. A pilot like Helluva Boss’ sells me on its idea since it actually has a theme, a premise, and actual characters.

@metalsentry @chubshrub To properly consume media in good faith, you need to take into account the potential intent of the creator. If the pilot doesn’t have an intense story arc and is just jokes/slapstick, then a deep story probably isn’t what they’re going for. Same with stuff like Tom and Jerry.

@CaptStarr01 @chubshrub It’s shallow because it’s not about anything. We don’t know anything about the premise or the characters. Spongebob showed characters and a premise. Looney Tunes had inventive comedy. This pilot has none of that. Why should I be invested? The writing is just not very interesting.

@metalsentry @chubshrub What makes this shallow tho? Is SpongeBob shallow? Looney Tunes? This reminds me of shows like The Weekenders or Recess or Rocket Power. Lil slice of life adventure stuff that while not having some huge over arching plot, can be just as engaging/entertaining
