@deryaocctherapy I also feel like this, we’re taught to promote independence in ADLs in OT however my culture and religion share different values for the older adult. It’s a lot to balance 😅

it’s really important for us OTs to know this. This approach has advantages as older patients aren’t neglected & taken care of to the highest standards however disadvantages are it’s difficult to set goals to promote their independence to a certain extent due to these factors

The western culture is big on promoting independence & so do we as Occupational Therapists however It’s very common to see older service users from India, Pakistan, Somalia & Turkey etc being taken care of their children because it’s what their faith teaches (Islam) 🧵

I can’t believe it’s my last week @rdash_nhs I remember my first day at The Woodlands Hospital & how quickly I had to learn Rotherham (this is hard for a Lancashire Lass). I’ve honestly learnt so much & will miss having a random party to country western music with my patients
