If you've been told God is too merciful to send anyone to hell but something inside you knows that can't be the whole truth, St. Faustina was actually shown what most people refuse to believe.
“I, Sister Faustina, by the order of God, have visited the abysses of hell so that I might tell souls about it and testify to its existence.” (Diary 741)
Most people today do not want to hear about hell.
Some deny it exists.
Some joke about it.
Some assume everyone goes to Heaven no matter how they live.
But St. Faustina wrote something very different in her Diary.
She said an angel led her to see the sufferings of hell so she could warn souls and call them back to God’s mercy. The Church does not require Catholics to believe private revelations, even those received by saints. But St. Faustina was canonized by Pope John Paul II, and the Divine Mercy message connected to her writings has been embraced throughout the Church.
What she described was not entertainment or exaggerated fear.
It was separation from God.
In Diary 741, St. Faustina described what she called the sufferings of hell.
First: the loss of God.
Then: constant remorse of conscience that never ends.
She wrote that the souls there know their condition will never change.
She described a spiritual fire that torments the soul without destroying it, continual darkness, hatred of God, blasphemy, despair, and the constant company of Satan.
And then she added one line that should make every person stop and think:
“But I noticed one thing: that most of the souls there are those who disbelieved that there is a hell.”
That is hard to hear.
But St. Faustina did not write these things to make people hopeless. She wrote them because she understood that God’s mercy is real, but so is the danger of rejecting Him through serious sin without repentance.
And after this vision, she did not become harsh or condemning toward sinners.
She wrote:
“Consequently, I pray even more fervently for the conversion of sinners. I incessantly plead God’s mercy upon them.”
That is the heart of the Divine Mercy message.
Not fear without hope.
Not mercy without repentance.
Jesus, I trust in You. 🙏
💬 Do you think modern culture has stopped taking sin, repentance, and eternity seriously?
