California hasn’t elected a Republican to a statewide office since in over 20 years. Los Angeles hasn’t elected a Republican for mayor since 1997. The L.A. City Council has 15 members, not one Republican. Four are Democrat-Socialists, one of whom is running for mayor.

Tomorrow, my son will be called up to the Torah as a bar mitzvah, a marking in a young man’s life (or young woman’s - a bat mitzvah) when they become responsible for observing Jewish commandments, mitzvot. As his father, his father’s father and so many generations before us have done, he will recite the blessing for the first time as an adult. Outside, there will be police presence, as there has been every day for the last number of months, my son often asking why they are there. Inside, there will be prayers and celebrations and rejoicing. Outside, there will be hate and vitriol and calls for our destruction and death. Inside, there will be love and community and calls for peace in Canada and Israel and the world. Outside, there will be a world, influenced by terror and darkness. Inside, there will be a world, influenced by G-d and light. Outside, the world is very different than it was at the time of my bar mitzvah and my father’s (perhaps not my grandfather’s). Inside, it is how it has been for 3500 years. This is how we survive. This is how we win. No matter what is going on in our world, we continue to be Jews. We continue to teach Judaism to our children and our children’s children and try to invoke a sense of Jewish identity in them, so they teach their children and their children’s children. I am incredibly proud of my son, as he marks this milestone in his life. And I am even more proud of my people, the Jewish people, who have fought and persisted for so many centuries, so that my son can proudly become a bar mitzvah tomorrow. Shabbat Shalom everyone. May we all know only simchas (happy joyous occasions) in our lives.

Find something especially sympathetic to spend money on, spend a lot of money (paying your cronies who kick back some to you or your campaign), help very few people if any, trumpet your good deeds and feel good about it.

In 2023 Newsom was given a bill to sign that would have required private insurers to cover hearing aids for children. Many other states require insurers to cover them. According to NY Post, Newsom vetoed the bill and decided instead to have the state provide the hearing aids. The result was $23 million spent on hearing aids for 300 people. About $76,000 a person. About 20,000 children in CA still need hearing aids. Well done Gavin.

Tamar, her husband Johnny, their 5 year old twin daughters, Shahar and Arbel, and 2 year old Omer--Omeriko, were beloved by the entire community. After Gaza's people set the house on fire, Gazans came in and shot them all to death. Tamar's last message even in this horrific time was checking in on others in the Kibbutz. They were found embracing one another. Even in their final moments, all they gave the world was love. 💔💔💔💔💔

How can you not cry when you read this story???? 12-year-old Liel Hetzroni from Kibbutz Be'eri was burned alive by Hamas terrorists on October 7th. When the forensic archaeologists team came to collect her remains in took them 6 weeks to identify her remains; there was so little to bury that the family chose to put in her coffin her dolls and toys for burial. Liel was killed alongside her twin brother Yanai, her great-aunt Ayala, and her grandfather Avia Hetzroni. We will never forget.
