This broke my heart. “Why would one of the richest men in the world commit such an act of injustice?” Halimi asked. “Sometimes I think that if Elon Musk himself were fully informed about this matter, he would likely be deeply ashamed.” Feeling shame @elonmusk @NateCavanaugh?!

On the left: Nate Cavanagh, a 28-year-old DOGE staffer and college dropout. On the right: Mohammad Halimi, a 53-year-old exiled Afghan scholar. This is the story of how DOGE targeted Halimi on social media. Then the Taliban took his family. 🧵

Surreal and terrifying. We evacuated as a precaution last night & now the Hollywood Hills are burning. Thankfully the winds have subsided enough for aerial drops, but heartbreaking to see our city torn asunder & families lose everything. LA isn't going to be the same.

Today’s @nytimes The Daily goes deep on how privatizing Americans’ retirement savings via the 401K system has left the majority of seniors unable to save or without the ability to stop working at all. Our 401K system has roots in Reaganomics and bootstrap thinking, and has, unsurprisingly left most working Americans behind. It’s time to envision a Guarantee Economy for ALL Americans–from infancy to retirement. nytimes.com/2024/05/20/pod…

"Capitalists don't want market economies, where they have to compete with one another, eroding their margins and profits – they want a planned economy, like Amazon, where Party Secretary Bezos and his commissars tell merchants what they can sell and tell us what we must pay" !!!
Cory Doctorow NO LONGER ON TWIT TER@doctorow

Combine Angelou's "When someone shows you who they are, believe them" with the truism that in politics, "every accusation is a confession" and you get: "Every time someone accuses you of a vice, they're showing you who they are and you should believe them." 1/

@roybahat I am in the same place--extreme sense of disorientation. I think this is the only humane place to be right now, rather than in a place of certainty and self-righteousness. 💔💔💔

For weeks (months?), I keep trying to write to figure out my thoughts and feelings about the Middle East, and struggling to say anything meaningful. Still in that place. Continuing to work at it, just to figure my own views. I've been horrified, alternating with being numb, for long enough I can't remember what it was like before. Dumbfounded by October 7. Dumbfounded by what is happening in Gaza, with the support of our tax dollars. Dumbfounded by Hamas. Dumbfounded by Bibi. Dumbfounded by antisemitism. Dumbfounded by the erosion of standards of humanity. Dumbfounded by tribalism of every kind. Dumbfounded by TikTok-level of "expertise," and a shortage of genuine experts people trust. Dumbfounded by mobs that have no way to stand down. Dumbfounded by my own inability to find my place to stand. And then today I am again dumbfounded, and I expect it will all get worse. Grateful for those taking action, these are impossible choices without obvious answers. Anyone who thinks it is simple must be much smarter or more morally clear than I am. Jealous of those people.

"AI could create situations where workers might retain their jobs, but critical aspects of their roles that they find enjoyable or meaningful could be replaced by technology, leaving them with tasks that feel tedious or alienating." iftf.org/projects/three… A must read!
