A NASA astronaut must currently be qualified in robotics and spacewalks, in addition to the operations, maintenance, and experiments they will be working on. It's time to step away from that model and allow more specialization, similar to the Shuttle days when we had payload specialists who were trained to carry out specific experiments in their field. As we shift the model for human spaceflight, I believe we also need to step back and shift the requirements.

@JulianFried Neat metalurgical equipment! I recommend having a reference library for operators to read while waiting for specimen processing: ASTM E3, and AWS D17 are a good start. Make wizards out of your metalurgical folks. It's a pleasant rabbit hole to fall into.

I do very little long-form writing, but there are a lot of questions about orbital data centers that I don't see being answered. It's easy to dismiss the idea as absurd or to call it the next revolution. Very few people have actually dug into the math. Here's the reality: Leaders of the big AI labs keep painting a future in which humans are marginalized. The result is serious regulatory pushback to terrestrial data centers, and if that trend continues, the only way to keep growing may be to move AI infrastructure off-world. why am i even a engineer instead of a middle school science teacher taking my class to little field trips in the creek to tell them about rocks and trees and birds and ants and plants. i think about this a lot. maybe that’s what ill do next or maybe ill go be a firefighter again or maybe ill do nothing. maybe ill just do nothing. and that’s fine too! but they dont tell you its fine to do nothing when youre 18. they tell you you have to be an engineer or a science teacher or a firefighter so you spend a decade doing that and then you think wait why am i doing this again? and anyways a lot of life is like that.

@MattGialich You're pushing your engineers at a good pace. Get test datapoint and move on. If pretty test setups was the goal, then sure, spend time cutting every thermocouple to size and planning where each one is routed. Non-recurring thermal testing is a means to an ends: ship spacecraft.

We are not great at wire management. Whatever, testing underway!
