@metaplexmovies i remember reading him talk about having to use primes instead of zooms for the whole film since there aren’t really zooms that cover 70mm, and i think you can really see how it forced him to think about staging more

Tarantino also gets a lot of mileage out of windows –– the skylight giving the center table warm toplight (which also bounces off the surface), the beams of moonlight bursting in the background, the ceaseless whirls of the blizzard. he's always finding new dramatic frames

I've been inching back through Tarantino's filmography since seeing PULP FICTION on 35mm and my possibly controversial opinion is that THE HATEFUL EIGHT is his most beautifully directed and staged movie

@mattzollerseitz most of the time someone notices it on take 1 or 2 and it gets fixed, so it’s *usually* a case of using the best take for performance. similar to out of focus shots. movies are just shot so much faster than they used to be and time = money

I use subtitles for home viewing, because everything is mixed for the director's $3K home entertainment system and not for the tech that almost everyone else on earth uses

@mattzollerseitz @mattkeeley current trends in the digital age are *really* soft lighting since cameras and lenses are so sharp and show any imperfections. i think the lack of contrast as a result might be the main thing. i can watch the godfather and not squint my eyes to see, and that’s a DARK movie
