@BolshevikBeyond Materialism is not physicalism, but it can't be indifferent to the materially/biologically given of embodied sex. 'Self-affirmed gender' restores the body/mind, and even body/soul distinction. How can you tell people they're objectively of a class, but not objectively their sex?

There is a reason I’ve stopped orienting who I associate with around the China question when building hegemony *here* is a significantly more relevant question, but not only is this bad for China no matter your stance on its economics, it also hurts that very question of hegemony

@harbingerofwoke You Geese kids are nutters. What would you like him to have seen most? The Gulag? The Great Leap Forward? North Korea? Feral capitalism in post USSR Russia? 500 books from Brill on Lukacs?

Sometimes it makes me sad when I think about the fact that Marx never really got to see the fruits of his labor. He never saw any of the world shattering revolutions based on his theories, the literal billions of people totally consumed by his studies. He wasn’t alive long enough to ever perceive a fraction of how influential he would really be.

@unison_moody @soulkhan Yes, of course. But do sex scenes work in non porn film if they're just trying to be beautiful and expressive? Or do they always leave us between porn and non porn spectatorship, feeling guilty yet dissatisfied? A lot of arty sex scenes are just ghastly...

@michaelm071130 @soulkhan As if a movie is just about narrative. There is more than I am comfortable to count what a movie can do and a narrative is just one of theose things, albeit a more important one for most.

@AndrewWoodman When it's a possibility versus a certainty, mathematical probability isn't king. 50k is 50k in yr hand. 50% chance of one mill is the chance to feel everlasting regret that you didn't take the safe option. It's a rational act not to take the gamble.

my new feminist hero is almayra shah from the BBC's ~i kissed a girl~ season 2. she has reconciled her sexual orientation with her faith (muslim); she doesn't believe in sex before marriage; and she wore a turtleneck to the exhibitionist leather straps party. absolute legend ⭐️

@comradejumpshot It seems to have a dozen articles analysing the situation in which socialism is reviving and fighting. Seems quite an offer to me...

Today's ALP is no longer the party of Hawke and Keating, or even of Carr and Bracks. It's the party of Richard Marles and little men like him. Richard fucking Marles. crikey.com.au/2026/07/23/lab…

@ArthurMacwaters @dcbuilder It was all bureaucrats. It wasn't capitalism. There were private businesses but commodity trade didn't dominate the society. All those things could be built because the state had its own income plus slaves plus taxes. The new Rome is China.

@dcbuilder Very cool! Point is more about the ubiquitous ambition of their civic work, much of which has yet to be surpassed despite massively lower cost materials and machinery

What blows my mind about the Roman Empire is that lack of technology is far easier to overcome than lack of freedom from bureaucrats Like unironically these guys built the most insane civic architecture and still hold the record We have to technology to build something a hundred times bigger than ever but instead we chose to employ bureaucrats and allow them to micromanage every detail of buildings down to toilet spacing and the number of fasteners per foot They were willing to spend a significant portion of their GDP on making their civilization epic, and we have cheap bullshit and decay Terrible trade Absolutely humiliating

Look it up. Helmets make zero difference. And I played American football for a season in Ohio, in 1978. Constant head-clashing. Stars before my eyes.
Anders Axelson 🇦🇺@AndersAxelson1

@Peter_Fitz The Americans figured out that helmets were a good idea for their football a century ago. Soccer, the rugby codes, and 161 are only starting to figure it out now!

@walletcheck Did anybody really claim he was an actual stoker? The famous story is he wrote the novel at work, on the night shift. So it's assumed he wasn't stoking

so according to legend, Faulkner wrote As I Lay Dying while doing this job. per Blotner bio—it's true, Faulkner worked in a boiler room just like this. he was the manager. he sat at a desk & wrote all day, occasionally bossing around the two Black employees who did all the work

@peter_tulip I don't trust you not to be blinkered in these. You wrote a snooty comment on Kate Shaw, suggesting that demand was static, and could not possibly be increased by increased supply, and she was an idiot. That was so obviously wrong and self-serving, rules you out as trustworthy

Pauline Hanson thinks women experiencing DV should just leave. Often they have no money. Many fear being stalked. The DV murders are overwhelmingly of women by abusive male partners. Look at what happened to Hannah Clarke and her three children. Stop blaming the victims.
