Bonfire of the Vanities of the Premier League? Tuesday: Liverpool lost, Spurs battered, Newcastle drew at home. Wednesday: Arsenal lucky to draw, City battered by Valverde and Real’s ferocious work ethic, Chelsea opened up by PSG and some 24-Kvarat gold. Not a great midweek for PL clubs. Why? Refs stricter on grappling? Little rest or respite before Champions League week? Not the greatest standard in the PL this season? Money isn’t everything? Goalkeepers? Opposition talent/organisation? Second legs to come next week, five at home. Liverpool and Arsenal should still go through; Newcastle face difficult trip to Barcelona; Spurs, Chelsea, City have three-goal deficits to overcome. 2/6. Could do better. #UCL

@pieandbov For future reference what’s the difference between a silly challenge and a tangle?

Rangers 5 Kilmarnock 1 Rangers moving back into 2nd spot in the table, just 3 points behind Hearts and chomping up 5 goals on the Jambos goal difference this week to boot after this five star display against Killie at Ibrox. It's now 22 points from the last 24 on offer for Danny Rohls men and all told he's won 13, drawn 3 and lost just 1 of his 17 league games in charge. Cracking strike from Skov Olsen probably the cherry on the cake in an excellent night for the home side. They host Queen's Park in the cup on Sunday afternoon. An absolute nightmare start for Killie obviously making the game script unbelievably difficult, and in truth it was a really silly challenge for Thompson to make as he effectively wrote the game off for the visitors inside 5 mins. To their credit they didn't really capitulate till late on and they certainly have a case to feel aggreived at the tangle between James Tavernier and Tyrece John-Jules that could easily have seen the Rangers man join Thompson with an early bath. As it was, they ran out of peep late on as would be expected and took a sore one to their goal difference. They have the weekend off to prepare for a massive home game against St.Mirren on Weds night.

At Tynecastle Park tomorrow, a Hearts team that has been top of the league since September face a Celtic one that many still regard as title favourites. It’s genuinely exciting and interesting. Hearts have turned heads. theguardian.com/football/2026/…

Diego Armando Maradona, who died on this day in 2020, aged 60. Here he is aged 18 in June 1979, looking out over Hope Street from the Central Hotel. He scored his first goal for Argentina that day, the third in a 3-1 win. #Glasgow #maradona

@Zilch0284 Kinghorn still gets the nod for me at FB, bad autumn notwithstanding. I think Jamie Richie has to start, he's a fabulous player.

@craigray11 SFM should have gone in the bin at best, but the rest of the game, the Irish are incredibly lucky there weren't more cards coming their way. I can only assume the booing went on because the SFM tackle went unpunished and created a bad taste in the mouth of the fans at the aviva.

I'm seriously concerned about Irish crowds' understanding of rugby laws...booing Ryan's red card, when he was lucky not to be straight red, and also baying for card for Moodie when he was the ball carrier...

Imagine being Kenny McLean; you grow up desperate to play football, you graft your whole life for it but you’re never sure if you’re going to get to experience a World Cup like the one you watched your country play in as a 6 years old boy. Then, at the age of 33, an injury to a teammate means you come off the bench early on in a qualification decider, you’re seconds away from winning it, you’ve got the ball at your feet with everyone just hoping to see out the last few delicate seconds and send Scotland there, you’re on the halfway line, the keeper is scrambling back and you think “You know what; bollocks to it!” and smash it towards goal, uncorking bedlam all around you, instantly creating one of the most iconic moments in Scottish football history and becoming a hero forever more. It’s hard not to be romantic about the game.
