Just some clarification. The UK largely imports its oil from Norway, the United States and even Algeria - and produces its own crude from the North Sea. While it clearly has to pay more when the global pricing goes up it's not that reliant on oil from the Gulf states or via Hormuz. Retail pricing is a function of commodity pricing (for refined product) and tax/duty. About 50% of the cost of a gallon of petrol or diesel goes to the government. The rest covers wholesale costs and retailer margin. So it's the UK government that controls retail pricing most. The UK does depend on the Gulf states for aviation fuel but America's exports of aviation fuel have been increasing markedly to take advantage of the Hormuz crisis it created.

Who is this foreigner and why is she saying such terrible things about Irish people? Our institutions are failing and thus the state will fail. However the Irish nation will continue. We need complete institutional reform, the state must serve the nation not vice versa.
Dr. Ribena Berry: You’re All Afrophobic@OldNormality

This very uncomfortable looking, regime appointed Canadian tr@mp, laying down the law to Irish protesters. How on earth is the protest hampering the supply of clean water? Absolute ghoul.

Visited the protest on O'Connell St trying to help find a solution. It is unbelievable that the gov has escalated this protest to where fuel is running out on forecourts across the county. Mícheal Martin, pick up the phone, organise a meeting & let these people go home.

Bloody cheek. Cheap smears by Irish Justice Minister, complacently & condescendingly saying Irish protesters - his own fellow citizens - are being manipulated by outside forces. Because of course, they'd never have the nouse to be furious all by themselves. Eejit! Meanwhile, one reason for the protests - huge & increasing carbon taxes on fuel that are imposed because of - eh - that outside force called the EU.
Virgin Media News@VirginMediaNews

Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan says fuel protesters are being influenced by external figures, urging them to recognise the impact of their actions. He referenced Tommy Robinson as an example of those seeking to use the protests to advance their own agenda. #VMNews

The situation in Ireland is exactly what the ruling class want.. Once the military is on the streets there's no going back. Either people fight and take back control of their lives or the cowards in government win. This will be the Litmus test for other countries.

Absolutely pathetic. Irish Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan was just interviewed on RTE and he doubled down on his suggestion that Irish farmers are being manipulated by a British man who lives in Spain. The Irish government has lost the PR battle and they're now flailing about like eejits.

Why can't the government meet with fuel protesters, see what can be done about punitive taxes rather than insult and gaslight them?

You signed Net Zero by 2050 into law. That's led to huge solar and wind farms blighting the countryside and seascape. Best to sit out any discussion about nature risks, if I were you.
Theresa May@theresa_may

Nature degradation is projected to cost the UK economy a 12% loss to GDP over the next decade - greater than the impact of COVID‑19. I recently chaired a summit of UK businesses on nature risk to discuss why nature is fast becoming the next frontier for business resilience.
