@siennamarla Always interesting when a Party finds itself in a collective position of having no idea what the right next step is. Probably in this case because there isn’t one.

EXCL: Senior Labour figures are concerned that the party will be dragged towards “bankruptcy” if Andy Burnham successfully stands as its candidate in the Makerfield by-election, triggering a mayoral by-election and possibly a leadership contest Others say a Burnham leadership would attract enough new members to counteract all the costs: politicshome.com/news/article/b…

@helen_macnamara @cleowatson88 Now this alone is a very good reason you should be Cabinet Secretary. But then we wouldn’t have the pod so… selfishly I’ll accept the status quo 🫶

@michaelscase @AvaSantina Part of North Ashton is in Merseyside - I was a Neighbourhood police officer there - on certain roads we’d ask the caller what colour their bin was to work out which force attended

Here lies Starmer’s problem: why not have sacked Streeting before he resigned? Ministerial position was untenable. Resignation was likely. Reads as indecision, a hallmark of Starmer’s premiership

@JuliaHB1 Maybe take some comfort from it being a erm slightly porridge resignation. Was it a challenge, wasn't it?

Streeting ally: "Wes has numbers but taken decision not to trigger challenge/immediate contest as clear that wouldn’t be right thing for party. Keir needs to set out a timetable and allow widest possible contest. It’s the only way to rebuild from this mess."

Streeting: "Leaders take responsibility, but too often that has meant other people falling on their swords." Letter leaves open possibility he could endorse someone else.

Ahh thank you @greenmiranda on @notanother1pod for being the first podcaster I've heard to call out the electoral results in the town I grew up in, St Helens, as something of note! General feeling was a 'donkey in a red rosette' would win every time.

Haha @DailyTPodcast having grown up there am LOVING @CamillaTominey upgrading St Helens to Cheshire. Technically Merseyside, people think it weird it's not Lancashire... but does have a Cheshire postcode. And always a non starter for Burnham after the Reform tsunami last week.

@PaulBrandITV After the council results in St Helens last week not exactly surprising as Reform would be salivating at the prospect of a by-election there. I'm guessing there's a Liverpool MP you could be tracking down instead.

@clarkaw Do any of his successors think the press are going to give them a free ride? Is there a magic pot of money somewhere? Are any of them better communicators than Starmer? The answer to all of these questions is no.

If Starmer is forced out, he’ll be the fifth PM in a row to last less than a full term. There are some structural issues making the job near impossible. Changing the name above the door won’t fix it.
