@profswitzer @SethLargo Yeah, no. You assume way too much about the writer and reader. You assume you’ve written with perfect clarity. You assume the reader has perfect understanding. “This” alone is sloppy, unpolished, and shows a lack of empathy for the reader. Basic.

One of the most distinct markers of actual undergraduate writing: the unspecified pronoun. Even the best writers do this at least once in every essay.

Kind of, it's close to the equivalent. The main difference is if you're going there to actually eat, having someone take an impromptu photo shoot while you guys are trying to sit down and have a meal and have a conversation is extremely rude. If she wants to do her food Instagram she probably should do it on her own time and not waste your time while you're eating dinner with her. This is different than playing a video game, because the man is expressly doing that on his own time and she's literally ruining his progress and enjoyment out of boredom, or jealousy for attention.

This is like the equivalent of turning off your console mid game, shutting down other people's enjoyment is not cool.
