Maybe retired, maybe on my gap year, not sure. Try to be pragmatic, but it’s not always practical. Grandad is my favourite title. Flippant, Sweary, Musings.

@Scaramucci @JohnWilkinspsyc Why aren’t the Guardrails being implemented…
English

Trump was crazy in his first term, but people stopped him.
Gary Cohen put the tariff memorandum in the shredder.
Nobody let him bomb North Korea.
There were rational people in the room who looked at each other and said — we’re going to curb his crazy.
If he’d won in 2020 he’d still have had Republicans around him.
Not perfect. But people who loved the country and would have kept him in check.
And we’d be done with him by 2024.
But he lost and losing fortified him.
Trump 1 had guardrails.
Trump 2 has none.
That’s the difference and that’s why this moment is so much more dangerous.

@SClark51032281 @agbdrilling Indeed, false neutral - we called it gear change pedal. Great gearbox once one got the hang of it…
English

@mickm115 @agbdrilling As long as you knew to slide your foot off the clutch and not lift your foot off for that would give your ankle a very painful whack as the fluid flywheel reacted.

🔵 🧵 The Tory outrage over Peter Mandelson looks theatrical when you remember this:
In February 2023 while they were still in government senior Conservatives, led by Michael Gove, attended a closed-door cross-party summit at Ditchley Park.
It was chaired by Mandelson and attended by figures like Goldman Sachs MD 👉Olly Robbins 💥
The purpose? To discuss how to “remedy the failings of Brexit” quietly, and with business and institutional backing.
So let’s be honest about what’s going on.
Mandelson wasn’t suddenly “back”.
He was already being brought back in across party lines.

When we struggled to deploy a brigade in a 400K army 3 years after WW2.
Sir Humphrey@pinstripedline
A fascinating 1948 memo from Field Marshal Montgomery stating that the Army required at least 400,000 people ("excluding women") to fulfil its duties. It states; "400,000... represents the minimum numbers required if the Army is to meet its foreseeable commitments adequately".

I’d normally be the kind of person who wouldn’t stand up for a politician like Starmer. There’s plenty I don’t agree with him on; I find Labour a big disappointment and nowhere near as radical as I’d like on issues like abolishing the House of Lords, proportional representation, legalising pot, nationalising water, a wealth tax, and rejoining the EU.
However, I also recognise some good things this government is doing or has done: workers’ rights, GB Energy, improving the NHS, VAT on private schools, closer ties to Europe, and standing up to Trump. I understand they were never going to fix the mess made by the Tories overnight and they have to prioritise.
The attacks on Starmer are relentless. I might not agree with him on everything; I even find him a bit boring, but I don’t see the "incompetent monster" they paint him as. He’s not corrupt, he’s not incompetent, he’s not dishonest, and he’s not self-serving. I see a decent man trying his best. I don’t see the buffoon I saw in Johnson or a reckless halfwit like Liz Truss.
I voted Lib Dem and will do again as I have a Lib Dem MP, but that doesn’t mean I want to bring this government down or see it fail. I wish Starmer all the luck in the world and hope he stays on, as he’s a darn site better than his Tory predecessors.

@nicholadrummond Get Warrior upgraded - the best plan. They told us in 1978 that 432 would be gone by 1985…🤷♂️
English

The British Army plans to upgrade 148 MBTs to Challenger 3 standard - enough to equip three Type 44 regiments. Increase this number to 176 (28 extra) and it could generate four tank regiments. This would allow it to configure square brigades with 2 x MBT regiments and 2 x IFV battalions in each. If the Warrior IFV is retained until 2030, while a new IFV is acquired in parallel, then modernisation is no longer dependent on Ajax.

@Ald19Dr @pippip343 @KernowQ A concept that people are struggling with - deliberately, I wonder why…
English

@pippip343 @KernowQ Vetting doesn’t preclude you from roles it just means they’re to monitor you more closely
English

Johnson became PM after he failed security vetting.
Where was the outrage?
Some changes needed to happen to the vetting procedures.
Viviane: 🌹Labour led by Keir for me@LaindonFEMINIST
Mandleson non story keeps running. Because it’s all they’ve got. Now its turned out Boris Johnson failed vetting for his role as Foreign Secretary. He got promoted to PM even though this was known. Keir Starmer was blindsided. Action will be taken. He’s in the clear.
English

@BraisbyI @Mikey1732 Tories had three PM’s in the last five years of their 14 year shitshow, but yeh…
English

@Mikey1732 Every sane and sensible person in the country agrees with you, except that precludes the 403 Labour MP's who will follow the Tory lead and just replace Starmer with someone who will do even more damage to the country
