Good piece by @TomisCrowley abc.net.au/news/2026-03-1…. Grandfathering is a hugely important issue - it would potentially increase intergenerational inequality if any change to CGT was fully grandfathered to exclude existing investments.

@gwynne007 It does, because at an average 2.5% inflation rate after 16 years the indexation gives the same CGT discount as the 50%, but prior to that investors generally get a bigger discount under the current system than they did under indexation.

@mikejanda I suspect, my surname notwithstanding, that the Phillips Curve isn't dead yet. It is logically the case that resource scarcity (in this case labour) should be inversely proportional to both specific and broad prices.

Let me add some 'day after' thoughts to yesterday's unemployment numbers: - While the 'rate' rose, we still created jobs. So this isn't your usual rise in unemployment - The rate, at 4.5%, is still well below the pre-COVID lows. It's not high by any objective measure 1/n

A(nother) reminder that while the RBA is trying to bring inflation down, the government continues to run a deficit Budget (and despite previous headline surpluses, has run domestic deficits for years). Some help, please, Treasurer?

@TMFScottP But inflation has been stabilising/starting to rise again even as unemployment has risen over the past year. Wages growth hasn't really been a major problem throughout the latest inflation episode, so perhaps we just need to abandon the Phillips Curve obsession once and for all?

@mikejanda That was the hindsight bias view many had, yes :) I suspect we're now learning that their assessment that sub-4% unemployment was sustainable was incorrect.

A far more minor inconvenience for me, but it would be nice for all of us who have feet at least half a size different to have this option rather than squishing the bigger foot in or having a loose shoe on the other foot bbc.com/news/articles/…

I love this story abc.net.au/news/2025-09-2… I've had such a thrill when I've seen an owl sitting on the powerlines outside our house a few times. It's great to think that at least some nature can co-exist with humans in cities.

Still not clear when we will see the official language on this Executive Order that I’m told has already been signed - it may or may not come out before market close.
Megan Cassella@mmcassella

The President has signed an executive order extending the U.S.-China tariff truce another 90 days, a White House official tells @EamonJavers. No word as to why this wasn't agreed in Stockholm, or in the two weeks since. Truce would now expire at 12:01 a.m. November 9.

@DrCameronMurray Look on the bright side Cameron. It's better to turn 43 than to not have turned 43.

I turn 43 today. It’s the first birthday I haven’t felt young. No more “It’s my birthday, I look forward to many more and wonder what I’ll do when I grow up.” More “Huh. Another year. My body is past its peak. I’m closer to death than birth.” I get the mid life crisis thing
