Announcing a new @IPUMS tool for variable search across all microdata collections! Look for "DISCOVER IPUMS VARIBLES" in the SUPPORT category on the left menu of any IPUMS splash page. Here is a search for the term "mortgage." 1/

BREAKING: White House issues new policy that will require, by 2026, all federally-funded research results to be freely available to public without delay, ending longstanding ability of journals to paywall results for up to 1 year. Coverage coming on @ScienceInsider.

I love traveling, especially for fun. But I really wish I could figure out a good way to practice guitar away from home, without lugging a guitar on an airplane. Rentals are usually too pricey and out of the way. Any good tips for practicing away from home?

@cbgoodman A lot of this has to do w/ the availability of data. Florida has what many consider to be the best state open records law in the country. NY and CA also publish a ton of data. Not the case for Texas, though.

@danvock Lots of good details in that GAO report. They have state level data in the appendix.

If you see any national crime stats cited for last year, take them with a grain of salt. Really good @MarshallProj summary here of some of the data reliability issues bit.ly/3OEfMOj

@mikemaciag Mike! Thank you so much! Honestly, I’d be surprised if I didn’t end up being inspired by something you’ve done at some point anyway. One of the GOATs of descriptive data journalism!

Everything is on fire in the world so of course today my son tests positive for Covid. (We haven’t had it yet.) His daycare dropped mask requirements last week. He was scheduled to get his vaccine Monday. So close.

Losses since before the pandemic began are likely greater than this chart showing changes since 2019. Census uses March as the reference month, so March 2020 data (not shown) likely reflect some temporary cuts. (2/2)

Some areas of government have incurred much larger job losses than others. Data released last month from the #Census Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll provide what's likely the most detailed national snapshot so far. (1/2)

Americans view state and local governments slightly less favorably than nearly 3 years ago. Still better than the federal government, though. More from new @pewresearch poll pewrsr.ch/3H9dtj9
