It was the kind of cold that bites out of spite, the kind that makes Minnesota feel mean on purpose.
The streetlights flickered like they were nervous — like they already knew what kind of crowd they were lighting up.
Of course they were already there. Waiting in the dark like they had nowhere else to be — which told me everything I needed to know.
Masks pulled tight. Eyes wild. Flags draped over shoulders like costumes — rainbows, foreign colors, things that didn’t belong to this block or this hour. Cardboard signs with HITLER and NAZI scrawled in big angry letters by people who wouldn’t know either one if they tripped over them. Faces pale from too many nights awake and nothing useful to do.
I looked at my watch.
Three a.m.
Don’t these people have jobs? Alarms to beat, lunches to pack, lives to show up for?
No.
Of course not.
Fireworks started snapping in the dark like cheap gunplay. Frozen bottles spun through the air, thrown by hands that talk about love and aim for teeth. Hypocrisy wears a lot of flags, but it always smells the same.
I didn’t mind the ones hanging back, yelling and filming, staying where they belonged. That’s their right. Always was. But the ones pushing forward — masked, snarling, itching — those weren’t protesters. Those were vandals looking for permission.
They didn’t get it.
The line held. Chaos bounced off it and came back coughing. The brave ones learned the street still answers to rules, even at night.
That’s when I moved.
I wasn’t there for them.
I was there for what they were hiding.
The file played in my head like a bad reel you can’t shut off. A kid. Quiet. Small. The kind who learns early not to make noise because noise brings trouble. Taken by a man who crossed borders the way predators always do — looking for new silence, new shadows, new victims. Used. Broken. Left behind. A life stolen so clean nobody noticed until it was gone.
Everybody wanted to save the criminal.
Nobody wanted to remember the child.
I found the dude inside. Standing there like he was owed something. Illegal. A record that read like a confession. The kind of evil that doesn’t snarl — it smiles and waits. The cat looked a lot smaller up close. But they always do. Monsters rely on darkness, not backbone.
The cuffs went on and he folded like wet paper. No fight. No words. Just gravity finally doing its job.
Outside, the crowd howled even louder, cameras hungry, history already bent into a lie. Let them yell. Let them point. I was thinking about a kid who never got a sign, never got a chant, never got a second chance.
My chest tightened. Not weakness. Fuel.
Because when nobody else stood up —
I did.
When everyone else screamed —
I followed the law.
When the child had no voice —
I gave them justice.
The door slammed. The engine cut through the cold.
And for one quiet stretch of night, the city was safer for the little girl who never got to grow up.
That was the job.
And I did it.
