Me: …when I realized I have autism… My new therapist: When were you diagnosed? Me: I’m not technically diagnosed. I pieced it together a few years ago. T: Consider yourself officially diagnosed! Me: Don’t you need fancy assessments and stuff first? T: Not always. Sometimes it’s pretty obvious. Me: ah, I see. … it’s that obvious? T: Yep! Me: I have been seeing therapists and psychiatrists for years and years… the fact that none of them ever realized it or brought it up seems like a bit of a travesty. T: You’re a woman. And yes, it is a travesty. It should have been recognized when you were a child and unable to make friends. You deserved clarity and support, and I’m sorry you never had that. Me: I am too. T: Does having a diagnosis now help you to have compassion for your struggling younger self? Me: I guess? But it doesn’t change what happened then or the fact that despite my best attempts at masking, I still seem to come across as intense, arrogant, and rude now. T: The people who think that don’t KNOW you. Me: I don’t want to have to introduce myself with the disclosure that I’m autistic. Mine isn’t the quirky, cute “acceptable” kind. T: Most isn’t. But if people might receive and interpret you differently if they knew that you are autistic, shouldn’t you give them that chance? Me: I feel like leading off with that info is just another way to alienate people. I don’t want it to be necessary. T: The right people won’t be alienated, they’ll be open-minded and supportive, and you deserve that. Me: Hm. I guess. But I still don’t want to. T: I suspect you haven’t learned to embrace this aspect of yourself, and that’s why you still want to create distance from it. Me: Well yeah, because apart from being self-diagnosed… T: …FORMALLY diagnosed! Me: …as far as I can tell, being autistic has only ever hurt me. Badly. T: No, others who misunderstood you hurt you. The autism IS you. T: I know you’re struggling to put yourself out there on social media to promote your business because of how people have misinterpreted you in the past. Maybe instead of trying to mask and hide your autism… maybe you need to embrace it. Me: 😕 T: Here’s your homework: I want you to look for and follow some autistic content creators who are open about it and have even made it a part of their “brand” to see how they approach it and talk about it. Me: Hm… ok. T: See you next week!
