@LiberalHivemind That's technically not true. Water doesn't precipitate where it evaporates. What's in the wastewater?

Most of the water being used by Data Centers is recycled & reused. Some is evaporated, eventually rains down returning to the land. Some Data Centers operate a closed loop system, little to no waste. It's the next climate hoax, don't fall for it. These narratives benefit China.

@lthlnkso OK O'Leary, we're gonna let you build this box of computers but me and my friends who live around this box want two grand a month for 20 years or I'm out.

@YIMBYLAND No, it's literally demonstrating the negative externalities of the technology.

Worth noting that the current datacenter backlash is what 40 years of anti-nuclear activism looks like in the present tense. The same movement that killed clean baseload is now mad that compute is straining the grid. Colossal self-own.
whimsy lohan (in London)@SexyLikeMeiosis

Climate activists have spent decades shutting down nuclear, blocking clean energy transmission, and trying to ban research on cooling the planet... but the movement that wins the next century will be led by the people doing the work, not those protesting it. New essay out today👇

@duncancampbell So tell them instead of "china is going to take over the world" "ai is going to take jobs" and give the locals a dividend.

I think people have the wrong idea about these new AI data centers. Building giga compute to do crazy high throughput math problems that greatly expand humanity’s intelligence and will make us much more capable of achieving our dreams is so vastly more compelling than building traditional cloud data centers that serve brainrot TikTok videos, Instagram posts. and porn.

AI hate is not organic. It is organized, amplified, and politically motivated. ChatGPT alone has around 1B users. That tells you everything. People are not being forced to use AI. They use it because it works. The outrage is manufactured. The adoption is real.

In the Communist Manifesto Marx and Engels promise a future paradise following a rough period of proletarian dictatorship. They never explain how you go from the rough period to the paradise. Reminds me a little of tech optimism. There will be a rough patch where everyone loses his job, along with it his sense of purpose and meaning. But down the line we're all going to be kicking back, being served by robots, living it up. No one explains how we go from the rough spot to the paradise because no one knows - and that makes me a little nervous.

@MatthewTortora_ I think your whatabout post reveals that the two are actually the same. That's why, as lefty on the sideline and opposed to both, there should be measures(agencies) to make sure those who are "downstream" are considered in these resource intensive projects.

@milesHtown Corn ethanol subsidies have always been silly, as well as *most* (not all) farmer wellfare. But that wasn’t even the point of the post, it was to point out the hypocrisy and ignorance of anti-data center slop posts.

Well, he blocked me. What a baby, lol. Take the Hollywood writer's strike, you negotiate *before* you lose your power. People need to keep pressing on data-center development until everyone is cut into the deal.

@weinerimer @sean_from_earth Not when incumbent corporations will use models trained on our personal data done through hardware and applications that applied soft coercion all so the looting and job reduction can continue. Call it rent, ubi, roi, or a dividend, "capital investment" ain't enough

@milesHtown I think this part is good. Like with any large industrial project, the local community should extract every dime they can, negotiate infra upgrades, cheaper/free energy, etc.

What's notable about this video is that the people who hate technology will completely ignore the logical arguments he makes and keep spouting nonsense because they just want to be mad at the system rather than trying to make anything better.
