I’m off work for a little while. My dear Dad died suddenly last Thursday night and the weight of grief has taken over. It doesn’t seem real. He was Mr Practical ready to come to anyone’s rescue. Full of life, tips & mischief. How is it possible that’s no longer the case?

@atweet4rt @campbellclaret Don’t forget that we are the electorate. We can always decide to be more patient, support a longer term plan. It doesn’t have to be this way

Cutting National Insurance and business taxes now, when you know it means huge cuts to public services after an election, does not feel like “long term decisions for a brighter future” to me. Sunak’s problem, like Johnson’s, is the mismatch between ever changing slogans and 1/2

@IainDale No crime. Being Conservative not a problem. Being shoe-horned in in a shocking display of cronyism is not good for democracy and will last for some people’s lifetimes.

Their crime is not to be young. Their crime is to be Conservatives. This criticism comes from the same people who rejoiced in Mhairi Black's election and the election of a 25 year old on Thursday in Selby. The hypocrisy is breathtaking.

Baroness Owen & Lord Kempsell who have less than a decade work experience between them but who now have jobs for life making laws because Boris Johnson said so, have made the case for abolition of the House of Lords clearer than I could

Struggling to comprehend the sheer absence of dignity, shame or embarrassment that lets you walk into a seat in the legislature for life knowing you have no qualification for the role and got there through naked cronyism alone bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…

@domjoly Is it any surprise that no-one trusts the commentariat any more. Embarassing.

This woman is the youngest woman put into the House of Lords. Can the @BBCNews do a special covering her achievements and background? It would be great motivation for other young women.

Seems strange to me that all of these comments are about money and I don’t see any about sustainability and climate change. Actions like this tell me much of what I need to know about how much our government cares

It's an essential part of the Foreign Secretary’s job to fly overseas for diplomatic engagement but I defy anyone to take this 360° tour of the jet James Cleverly is using for his current trip abroad and tell me this level of extravagance is ‘essential’. air-hamburg.de/images/360/D-A…

Agreed. And only Patrick can so beautifully use words such as panjandrum. I’m sure I’m not alone in envying his brilliance in crafting a sentence, not to mention an insight. Thanks @HoskingTheTimes

Seriously … As @HoskingTheTimes argued in this (superb) column pension funds are there to pay pensions. They are not the instruments of MPs whose own (generous) retirement benefits are guaranteed thetimes.co.uk/article/loosen…
