At the time of termination, they had no evidence he paid. *After* he was terminated and *they performed a deeper investigation*, thru determined he was correct and offered to reinstate his job. Whether it was a cookie or a turbocharger is irrelevant. If you take items from the Canteen in the break room without paying, that's a fireable offense. This is true at every company. If he had been able to prove he paid when they sat him down, that'd be the end of it.
