I keep this picture nearby at all times. I know it's kind of just a cheesy meme, but it serves an important purpose for me. It reminds me to pay attention to what actually matters. It reminds me to say yes to my kids more. It reminds me that at the end of my life I'm not going to care how many grains of sand in my hourglass I spent on business or work or anything like that. All that will matter at the end is your memories, and the way you impacted the people you love.

A 25-year-old recently messaged me asking for networking advice before an important professional event. Here are the 5 pieces of advice I shared: 1. Have a few "go-to" questions to engage people. It’s good to have a few trusted questions in your back pocket. If a conversation is floundering, pull one out. My favorites: • What are you most excited about currently? • What's lighting you up outside of work? • What’s your favorite book you’ve read recently? It takes the pressure off you and serves as an easy way to get people talking about something they're excited about. Win-win. 2. Use a "repeat and follow" model. After you ask a question, listen intently to the person’s response. When there's a pause or silence, repeat their response back to them in your own words and add on your own perspective or impression. Make mental connections. It shows presence and independent thought. 3. Say people’s names back to them. When you’re talking to someone new, make a point of saying their name back to them naturally in conversation. You’ll remember their name, and everyone loves hearing their name, so you’ll immediately stand out. Note: This can be taken too far and feel fake, so don't do it multiple times and don't force it. 4. Make situational eye contact. Eye contact is funny: Too little and you look shifty, too much and you look psychotic. I like situational eye contact: Deep while they speak, organic while you speak. It’s ok to gaze off while you think, but use eye contact to emphasize key points. 5. Leverage creative follow ups. Identify creative areas for follow up coming out of a conversation. Make a note of them after the event. Then actually follow up on them. Example: I used to talk about my favorite books with new people. Then I would send them a copy of it with a handwritten note to their office. I built many great mentor relationships with that as the start. Embrace those 5 pieces of advice and I guarantee you'll stand out at the event and be on the right track. If you enjoyed this or learned something, follow me @SahilBloom for more in the future.

A mind that is easily overhwlemed by emotion, that is rooted in the past instead of the present, that cannot see the world with clarity and urgency, will create strategies that will always miss the mark.

Your career is not meant to be straightforward. There will be moments when you question whether you love what you do. You will experiment with new things that might lead you to a whole new life. You will unlearn and relearn all your skills as the world changes. Stay flexible.

You know the phrase, “shoot for the stars and you might reach the moon”? Well, I think it should be, “shoot for the stars, you might reach them.”

Sometimes your greatest mistake is spending too much time thinking your past mistakes were actually mistakes instead of seeing them as lessons.

Don't ask, don't get. Sometimes all it takes is merely asking for what you want. Whether it's a raise, an opportunity to lead, a review, or something you'd love your partner to do, overcoming the fear of rejection or limiting belief you don't deserve what you want is a key step.

If you “don’t have time” to do the things that would keep you healthy, just focus on not doing the things that make you unhealthy. Don’t smoke Don’t eat junk food Don’t scroll social media Don’t drink sugary drinks or alcohol Sometimes stopping is the way forward
