𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲
While India has around 𝟮𝟲,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 and 𝟰𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬+ 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 (MoHFW, 2025), the real challenge lies in how these are distributed and who they truly serve.
States like 𝗨𝗣 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗵𝗮𝗿, with extremely high population densities (UP: ~828 persons/sq km), face far greater strain despite large hospital counts. In contrast, less dense or smaller states may have fewer hospitals but a more balanced service load. To put things into perspective, Bihar has 2 & UP has 5 hospitals for every 1 Cr population, while Maharashtra & Karnataka has 7 and 10 hospitals for every 1 Cr people.
Moreover, 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 tend to cluster in wealthier, urbanised states such as 𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗮, while remote and low-income regions lag behind due to logistical and financial barriers.
The takeaway is clear: 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. India’s healthcare progress depends on 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹–𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲.
