Like Gaza, Israel is deliberately destroying southern Lebanon to make it uninhabitable for its residents. That’s not a “model” or a “playbook,” it’s a crime against humanity. Call it what it is.

The suppression of memories of perpetration, a victim-centred self-image, and subordination to the US are all structured around the continued logic of the ‘kokutai’ — a highly stable system, but not a healthy one. Its stability rests on repression, and the cost will be high.

Years of revisionist campaigns have made cynicism about anti-war sentiment and indifference to Japan's past aggression increasingly intertwined. The pacifism Japan needs is rooted not in victimhood, but in its role as a perpetrator — yet that perspective is steadily receding.

⭕️ Thiago Ávila’s Mother Dies as He Remains in Israeli Detention Teresa Regina de Ávila e Silva, mother of unlawfully imprisoned flotilla activist Thiago Ávila, died Tuesday in Brasília after years of complications from strokes. She was 63. Ávila has been held in Shikma Prison since Israeli naval forces seized the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near Greece on April 30, and is unable to attend his mother’s funeral. Though no charges were filed, his detention was extended six days on Tuesday until May 10, based partly on secret evidence his lawyers were not permitted to review, according to Adalah. Brazilian President Lula called Ávila’s continued imprisonment “unjustifiable” and demanded his immediate release. Thiago has named his one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Teresa after his mother. From prison, Ávila dictated a letter to his young daughter, writing that he was sorry for not being home and that his mission was driven by the suffering of children in Gaza. 💢 A child was killed and a number of police officers injured, some critically, in an Israeli airstrike targeting the Sheikh Radwan police station in western Gaza City on May 5, according to the General Directorate of Palestinian Police. The strike comes amid ongoing daily violations of the ceasefire, with Israeli forces continuing to systematically target police personnel. Footage by journalist Nahed Hajjaj shows a mother kissing her child’s feet in a final farewell after the attack.

This included acts of state terrorism through the assassination of leadership figures. 🔹 A war of aggression in Feb. 2026, just as diplomacy was close to yielding results. It included the assassination of the Supreme Leader and other officials in acts of state terrorism; the massacre of 168 schoolchildren in southern Iran; the taking of 3,400 Iranian lives; targeting civilian infrastructure; and now, a new iteration of economic terrorism through an illegal blockade.

The lesson most often drawn from the pre-war period—military overreach—obscures the deeper problem: the structures that enabled it. The same mechanism may be at work today. The issue is not Takaichi so much as a system no actor can stop before it is already too late.

South Korea seems to have a culture of converting problems into energy. Presidential impeachment, street protests, even events like this all serve as channels through which social contradictions are brought into the open. That may be one of the fundamental differences from Japan.
