In New York City's fight against tuberculosis in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s, these nurses were heaven sent. 👼 A group of Black nurses known as the Black Angels were instrumental in the success of the first clinical trials for TB treatment. #BlackHistoryMonth

The MNA Board of Directors notes with concern the climate of repression at the University of Michigan being directed at staff, faculty and students who seek to peacefully protest and/or voice dissident views. The MNA calls on President Ono and the Regents to cease and desist from acts of repression and take steps to act in good faith to foster a climate conducive to civil and constructive dialogue.

We want to wish “Solidarity Forever” a happy 110th birthday! “Solidarity Forever” was originally written in 1915 by Ralph Chaplin, and its many covers have since become an anthem for the labor movement and working people’s fight for their fair share. youtube.com/watch?v=R8eK9Z…

Nurses top the list as the most ethical and honest profession for the 23rd straight year! We are incredibly honored that the sacred bond of trust we have with our patients has once again been recognized in the Gallup poll. nationalnursesunited.org/press/nurses-r…

Joint statement from #union #nurses: We call on @SpeakerJoeTate to stop blocking life-saving bills #mileg #lameduck #safestaffingsaveslives The following statement is from: Jamie Brown, RN, President, Michigan Nurses Association; Dina Carlisle, RN, President, RN Staff Council, OPEIU Local 40; and Pam Campbell, RN, President, Registered Nurses and Registered Pharmacists of Hurley Medical Center "We feel a responsibility to go on the record with what multiple people have confirmed and what many others in Lansing likely already know: House Speaker Joe Tate appears to be blocking bills important to frontline nurses from moving forward during the limited days left in the lame duck session. "It gives us no pleasure to conclude that Speaker Tate is misusing his power in this way; furthermore, he is violating many residents’ trust in his party. Like many organizations, especially unions, we had faith that Democrats having the majority meant they would do the right thing – and not just when it was easy. "Speaker Tate’s actions are turning that trust into disappointment. We are speaking specifically of the Safe Patient Care Act – a bipartisan package of bills that are all sponsored by Democrats, cosponsored by the majority of Democrats in both chambers, and supported by multiple unions and the Michigan AFL-CIO. "After these bills got a committee hearing in the House last year, we jumped through hoops and played nice – only to be left behind in favor of hospital corporations and their wealthy CEOs. "It is no exaggeration to say that these bills are a matter of life and death. Forty-two percent of Michigan nurses report knowing of a patient who died because of hospitals’ understaffing. There is too much at stake to remain silent. "Speaker Tate still has time to do the right thing. We hope he can find the integrity and courage to do so, for the sake of the tens of thousands of patients and nurses who are relying on their Legislature to act."

RN Leah Rasch, re: @UMHealthSparrow: "A lot of us were excited when (U of M) came in. We thought they were going to pump money into things we need, but right now they’ve just been putting it into buildings and signs ... "We deserve more than a logo change. We deserve some changes in the hospital staffing, in keeping patients and us safe. We just haven’t seen it.” via @CityPulse lansingcitypulse.com/stories/shorth…

Like a lot of folks, we are watching the clock with frustration as Michigan’s Democratic legislators risk wasting an opportunity to make important changes for the people of our state. Nurses from MNA and other unions are at the Capitol today to advocate for long-overdue passage of the Safe Patient Care Act. With just a few session days left in lame duck, it’s urgent for Democrats in Lansing to use their majority to show they stand with the people, not corporations. 42 percent of Michigan nurses surveyed know of a patient who DIED because of hospitals’ unsafe staffing! It’s simple: Everyone should be able to count on having the attention of a registered nurse when they are at their most vulnerable. Nurses don’t have the power to fix this public health crisis – legislators do. The people of Michigan need you to stand up to the wealthy hospital lobby and its millionaire CEOs. The Safe Patient Care Act is co-sponsored by the majority of Democratic lawmakers in both the House and Senate. Democrats, you have the power to do the right thing - what are you waiting for? #mileg #lameduck #safestaffingsaveslives

UAW
UAW@UAW·
NEW: UAW Calls on Michigan Legislature to Deliver for Working Class People in Lame Duck Session The UAW issued the following statement today calling on the Michigan legislature to deliver for working class people in the upcoming lame duck session: The UAW is the state’s largest union, with over 300,000 active and retired members in Michigan. For too long, corporations and the rich have taken more of the wealth we’ve created for themselves. They’ve rigged the rules of our politics and pitted working-class people against one another by telling us there isn’t enough for everyone. That must end. In the final days of the Democratic trifecta, we are calling on the legislature to show up and fight for working class people. Michigan’s lawmakers can fight for the working class or do the bidding of corporations and big donors, but they can’t do both. It’s time to pick a side. We must go on offense for living wages, health care, retirement with dignity, and time with our families. We must defend against corporate greed and divide and conquer politics. In the lame duck session, we are expecting action from our legislators, and we will be watching closely. Who stands with the working class on our core issues, and who stands with corporate interests? In the coming days, the UAW will be demanding action on important legislation that makes life better for working people and our families and that protects our rights and communities from harm. We need our leaders to fight for the working class all over this country, but it starts here in Michigan, the birthplace of the UAW.
