@miriamjayne A rabbi once told me “40 days” to ancient Israelites was shorthand for “we don’t know how many, but it was a lot.” Sort of like “hrair” in Watership Down. watershipdown.fandom.com/wiki/Lapine

@EladNehorai (I mean, it’s not irony, it’s a calculated, devious reinterpretation of the story meant to fire up their supporters, but you know what I mean.)
English

@EladNehorai I can’t get over any of this, but the particular irony of her saying that in front of a *massive* quote from Megillat Esther that’s *literally* about being called to leadership in order to *prevent* genocide is pretty freaking rich.
English

@EladNehorai Yes! The “basic reality” that we HAVE different operating systems (and that they are valid/real) has to precede understanding what those OSs are. And that also takes us down a rabbit hole of the “but G!d said so” rhetorical trump card, and thus we go around and around again…
English

@jgutoff @EladNehorai Ooh, I don’t know that work, will check it out…
English

@EladNehorai It’s more painful when the same thing happens inside Judaism - talking past one another because we don’t really share an interpretive process, or historical understanding, or whatnot. And finding shared values (which I know I brought into this) doesn’t cover it.
English

@EladNehorai So we just ended up in this stupid back-and-forth, never really hearing each other. Even though we probably have lots of shared values.
