Personally, I think Secretary Yellen's trip to China was a clear success -- not because of any short-term "deliverables" but rather because she (correctly) framed the nature of the challenge (from the FT) 1/2

x.com/maks_nafo_fell… Japanese PM Fumio Kishida speaking in the U.S. Congress: "You believed that freedom is the oxygen of humanity. The world needs the United States to continue playing this pivotal role in the affairs of nations. And yet, as we meet here today, I detect an undercurrent of self-doubt among some Americans about what your role in the world should be! This self-doubt is arising at a time when our world is at history's turning point. The post-Cold War era is already behind us, and we are now at an inflection point that will define the next stage of human history. The international order that the U.S. worked for generations to build is facing new challenges, challenges from those with values and principles very different from ours. Freedom and democracy are currently under threat around the globe." Via @Maks_NAFO_FELLA

Estonian defense minister Hanno Pevkur @HPevkur said his own government had found another million 155mm and 152mm shells and rockets for Ukraine. “If we combine these one million shells, the Czechs' potential purchases, our buying capabilities and also the British”—who reportedly are organizing their own ammo-for-Ukraine initiative—“I dare say that it would be possible to send Ukraine two-to-2.5 million shells this year, if the funding were available,” Pevkur told @Postimees.

There is now a bit of pushback against concerns about Chinese overcapacity. That is in part because the notion of overcapacity is itself poorly defined (capacity v domestic demand, v global demand or v the demand needed for decarbonization) But there is a real issue imo 1/x

Russian propagandists are telling us what they are planning to do: create a massive European crisis by making Ukraine uninhabitable. This can be achieved either through continued bombing, or through brutal occupation, or both. Listen to them. Take them seriously.

Genocidal scheming on Russian state TV: Andrey Sidorov, Deputy Dean of world politics at the MSU urges Russia not to miss the right moment to cause a massive refugee crisis in Europe, exacerbating economic and political tensions by causing a massive influx of Ukrainian refugees.

No lasting world order is possible without a sovereign, strong Russia – Putin. Some of his other statements: ◾️The West unleashed war in Ukraine and the Middle East, and now they say that we are going to attack their territory - they are talking nonsense. ◾️It is necessary to seriously strengthen the military grouping in the western direction after Sweden and Finland were drawn into NATO. ◾️Russophobia deprives of reason. ◾️No lasting world order is possible without a strong Russia. ◾️We, too, have weapons that can hit targets on their territory. ◾️We remember the fate of those who sent their contingents into the territory of our country. Now, the consequences for the interventionists will be much more tragic.
