My take: The Japanese government has very mildly supported U.S. operations in Iran. I think there has to be more debate and discussion in Japan about what really is at stake here and whether this is good or bad for Japan's future. In the big picture, the great power competition between the U.S. and China- Russia- Iran- North Korea will take place in the Eurasian Heartland, the Eurasian landmass. Regime change in Iran will definitely be positive for the U.S. and its allies in this great power competition. An overwhelming majority of the Japanese people don't like the war in Iran because, of course, it leads to higher oil prices, Trump didn't consult Japan or the U.N., Trump is all over the place in the justification for the war. It's very easy for the Japanese people to dislike this war. But in terms of strategy,  in the big context, it is going to be beneficial for Japan.

Ho Chi Minh City: A Legacy of War and A Future of Opportunity. The 2025 McCain Global Leaders cohort launched the Legacy Experience in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, exploring the profound history and lasting impact of the U.S.–Vietnam War. Through powerful conversations and a visit to the War Remnants Museum, leaders deepened their understanding of the milestones that have shaped the two countries’ relationship over the past three decades and the importance of peace and reconciliation post conflict. The cohort also engaged in a Leadership Luncheon with Global Advisory Council Member Jean Sung, who shared insights on leadership and philanthropy in the face of global challenges, and deepened global connections during a welcome reception along the Saigon River. To connect with Vietnam’s vibrant culture and history, the cohort also experienced the city firsthand by visiting iconic landmarks including the Saigon Central Post Office and Ben Thanh Market. Up next: Hanoi, Vietnam to retrace the footsteps of Senator John McCain.

In today’s episode of #StraitForward, host Channing Lee is joined by Taipei-based freelance journalist @heguisen to discuss his new book, Ghost Nation: The Story of Taiwan and Its Struggle for Survival. With over two decades of experience reporting for major news outlets from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Horton offers an "outsider-on-the-inside" perspective on the island’s history and how Taiwan has evolved from a geopolitical afterthought to an indispensable global player that still struggles for formal recognition.
