Пренебрегването на политическите репресии на границата на ЕС е опасен сигнал - не само за Анкара, но и за други режими, които наблюдават. Това послание изпратихме заедно с моя колега и кмет на Атина Харис Дукас в съвместна статия за авторитетното европейско издание Politico. 

Поводът е посещението ни в Истанбул в подкрепа на незаконно задържания кмет на града, Екрем Имамоглу. Достъпът ни до него беше отказан от турските власти, но въпреки това се срещнахме с неговия екип, с хората в общината, която не спира да работи усилено, със семейството му, както и с хиляди негови привърженици, които вече месеци наред всяка седмица излизат на протест в защита на Имамоглу. Призоваваме европейските институции и градове да заемат ясна и решителна позиция в подкрепа на демокрацията и местното самоуправление. Десетки опозиционни кметове в Турция са арестувани по съмнителни обвинения. Това е пряка атака срещу демокрацията на местно ниво, която не можем да подминем. Мълчанието относно случващото се в Турция - страна кандидат за членство в ЕС и стратегически партньор на Съюза - подкопава доверието в самите европейски ценности. Настояваме за среща с европейския комисар по разширяването, за да обсъдим заедно как предприсъединителните фондове са обвързани с върховенството на закона. Казусът "Имамоглу" трябва да бъде включен в дневния ред на Европейския съвет. В Истанбул, в София или в Будапеща - навсякъде, където демократичният избор на гражданите е обект на атаки, ние, кметовете трябва да устоим. Дължим го на хората, които са ни избрали. Градовете са сърцата на демократичните ценности - и това ги прави заплаха за авторитарните режими. Градските лидери не са просто администратори, а активни творци на промяната, която често започва първо на местно ниво. Кметовете имат силата и отговорността да действат в името на гражданите, дори когато националните правителства се колебаят да се намесят. Нашият ангажимент не приключва с тази мисия. Ще продължим да говорим открито и да настояваме за категорична европейска позиция. Дължим го на Имамоглу и на всички хора, които са дали своя глас за демократичното бъдеще на градовете си.
