@yasmin53709968 @AnneOBannon2 @joboaler When I was in elementary school, I would always feel nervous and anxious when taking timed multiplication tests. I was worried that I wouldn't finish all of the problems in one minute because how ever many problems I answered correctly, that was my grade.

@AnneOBannon2 @joboaler Some reasons for math anxiety is that some students decided in 3rd grade that math is not for them. Another reason for math anxiety is the timed test. Other reasons might include that students believe that they can’t memorize all the facts to complete it in under a minute.

@erojasss4 @AnneOBannon2 @joboaler Erica, I agree with you. The benefit of "Number Talks" is that the students take ownership of their learning. It allows the students to become teachers, and they enjoy sharing their strategies with the class!

@AnneOBannon2 @joboaler Benefits of student participation in "Number Talks" are that they can share their strategies and thought process to the class. Students can learn from each other and the teacher becomes the facilitator, allowing students to take ownership.

@SAldawd @AnneOBannon2 @joboaler Sue, I completely agree with you. Memorizing math facts can be challenging for some students, and it makes them believe they are not a math person. That is why we have to help students build number sense so that they understand math and succeed!

@AnneOBannon2 @joboaler Memorization of math facts is unnecessary and damaging because it changes the way students perceive math and does not influence how well they are able to grasp concepts. This only hurts students because they feel they will not do well because they have not memorized their facts.

@AnneOBannon2 @joboaler Fluency through number sense is an alternative to timed math tests. The tests would focus more on number sense rather than speed. Integrating fluency interviews, 5-minute chats with the students, is also an alternative because it gives us an insight into their way of thinking.

@AnneOBannon2 @joboaler We can encourage students to use numbers flexibly by helping them build a sense of numbers. Building number sense allows the students to break numbers apart and make problems easier to solve. The students can use manipulatives and participate in "Number Talks" to think flexibly.

@AnneOBannon2 @joboaler The benefits of student participation in "Number Talks" is that the students are exposed to different strategies and ways of thinking. The students take ownership of their learning by taking the lead and teaching others the strategies they used to solve a problem. #EDEL5200 #KTR
