@misternickzilla The generosity would more likely be something like being friendly and approachable to the bartender, or buying YOU a pint after you bought them one to repay an unspoken debt, rather than something obvious and potentially performative.

I feel like the template for a Hollywood actor becoming popular in the UK boils down to "can they take or deliver a joke at their own expense?" and "can I see myself buying them a pint in my local pub?"

British patriotism isn't defined by tokenistic flag waving or water-tight borders, it's a state of mind and a culture that can't be taught in schools. It's deadpan sarcasm, unspoken respect, empathy and quiet politeness. It's also a stubborn refusal to be led against our will.

A friend of mine used the term today which I think sums up my opinion of a the rising tide of the populist right in the UK: "plastic patriots".
