@WiscWeeds @ZaimUgljic Congratulations Dr. @ZaimUgljic! 👏

This week, @ZaimUgljic successfully defended his PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since joining our program in 2022, Zaim has helped plant the seed for an entirely new research direction in our lab, leading our first work on targeted herbicide application technologies. His work, developed through collaborations with partners across academia and industry, has helped us better understand how to optimize these emerging systems for real-world agronomic use. From countless miles across the Midwest chasing field trials, to contributing to multistate research, to mentoring teammates and engaging directly with growers and industry, Zaim’s impact has extended well beyond his own dissertation. A very important chapter of his PhD work was just published Pest Management Science, and we believe it represents a meaningful contribution to the scientific foundation of targeted spray technology: ✅ Targeted herbicide spraying systems: role of nozzle type, number of nozzle activation, nozzle orientation, and boom height on spray coverage and weed control. Ugljic et al (2026) Pest Manag Sci. doi.org/10.1002/ps.706… This work tackles a critical gap, moving the conversation beyond “does it work?” to how do we make it work better? By identifying how application parameters influence spray coverage and weed control, this research helps translate technology into agronomic performance. Zaim has gone above and beyond, as a scientist, teammate, and leader, and his work is already shaping how we think about integrating targeted spray systems into corn–soybean production.
