This map is the dream of all #Armenian military-patriotic forces. Especially aggressive are the advocates of the restoration of “Greater Armenia” many of whom live in the Diaspora. They live in illusions, believing that the goal of all Armenians should be the restoration of “Armenia from sea to sea.” This is nonsense. After Azerbaijan and Russia, this group of irresponsible patriots poses the greatest threat to Armenia’s statehood. If these marginal groups come to power in #Armenia, they will present territorial claims to all four of our neighbors. This would mean Armenia’s suicide. Today, they shout the loudest and accuse others of betrayal and of surrendering territories. These irresponsible patriots do not recognize international law; they do not recognize state borders. They believe that since #NagornoKarabakh is located on the historical territory of Armenia, then the dream of separating it from Azerbaijan and making it independent is legitimate and must be realized at any cost. Similarly, they believe that since the Russian-Turkish Moscow and Kars treaties are illegal - signed by entities that were not international subjects - Armenia must challenge them. These adventurists would not hesitate to present territorial claims to Turkey, demanding the return of “Western Armenia” to the Republic of Armenia. They do not consider the negative consequences for Armenia because they are irresponsible. Yes, 100 years ago, Russia and #Turkey seized the territories of the First Republic of Armenia, occupied the country, and divided the lands. Today’s Armenia was created on the territory occupied by the Soviet Union. But that does not mean we should ignore Turkey and present it with territorial claims. No. If we follow that logic, we will lose this state. Javakhk is under Georgian control, Azerbaijan controls Artsakh and Nakhichevan, seven vilayets of historical Armenia or so-called “Western Armenia” are under Turkish control, and historical Armenian regions like Vaspurakan, Paytakaran, and part of Syunik are under Iranian control. If we decide to restore “Greater Armenia” all our neighbors would declare war on us. This nationalist discourse is outdated and dangerous. It is madness. These people live in dreams of the past, forgetting the need to overcome today’s challenges. The Azerbaijani state has a history of about 100 years; it was established in 1918 through the unification of South Caucasian Muslim tribes. Armenian military-nationalists mock this state, calling it younger than Coca-Cola. I condemn this and believe that respect must be shown to all countries. #Azerbaijan is a corrupt, authoritarian regime, but I am obliged to respect that country. Azerbaijan is a serious adversary with ambitions of becoming a regional power. They see this as an opportunity to subjugate today’s Armenia. If military-nationalist groups are marginal in Armenia, in Azerbaijan they constitute the ruling elite. It is no coincidence that Aliyev’s administration invented and officially promoted the thesis of “Western Azerbaijan” which is a territorial claim directed at Armenia. If Armenian military-nationalist groups have no chance of forming a government, in Azerbaijan their leader is Ilham Aliyev. Our countries’ objectives differ. Armenia officially recognizes Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. Azerbaijan does not do the same regarding our country, as it officially claims parts of our territory. Armenia also recognizes Turkey’s territorial integrity and has no claims toward that country. Armenia would be in much greater danger if we had a far-right populist government. That would mean a permanent state of war with Azerbaijan. I am glad that the militaristic-nationalist groups are currently ridiculed in Armenia and cannot come to power. Our society has learned lessons from the 44-day war and has rejected the servicing of false agendas. Those who dream of a “sea-to-sea” Armenia are allies of Azerbaijan, because the outcome of both their actions will lead to Armenia’s destruction. Today, Ilham Aliyev is preparing Azerbaijan for war against Armenia and for the “liberation of Western Azerbaijan.” The president of Azerbaijan’s militaristic-nationalist party is Ilham Aliyev himself. And he is an ally of Armenia’s militaristic-nationalist forces, no matter how much they may appear to be opponents at first glance. Armenia will not live according to extremist agendas, and we need a reasonable, balanced foreign policy. That is the only formula for survival in this region. And now, it’s time to hear the insults directed at me by Armenian and Azerbaijani military-nationalist groups. Let’s go!!!

During these days in 1988, from February 27 to 29, a series of atrocities were carried out in city of #Sumgait in #Azerbaijan which marked the beginning of large-scale massacres against #Armenians in that country, openly orchestrated & sponsored by the state, turning decades of pressure & persecution into overt & widespread violence. The mass murders & torture of citizens of Armenian origin in Sumgait continued with the same patterns & horrifying brutality in #Baku, #Kirovabad & #Maragha. As a result of these events, hundreds of Armenians were killed & around half a million were forcibly displaced. The cycles of violence persisted until as recently as September 2023, when the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh was completely subjected to ethnic cleansing. 🕯️As we recall these events, each year we pay tribute to the memory of the innocent victims. At the same time, we believe that these are not merely dates of remembrance but moments to reaffirm the necessity of overcoming enmity to #prevent the recurrence of such tragedies in the future.
