In memory of my brother Lex, I’m cycling 1,200km from London to Denmark in 11 days to raise awareness about men’s mental health and suicide. I’m riding to raise £7,055. One pound for every life lost to suicide in 2023. havesomelove.com

Did a couple of things in @paper w/ Claude & if I was a solo designer right now I’d immediately swap over to it. Figmas lock-in at this point feels like collaboration, not sure how long that lasts. Needs better designing with AI, rather than just pipeline improvements for Eng.

The audacity of Jim Ratcliffe, a British billionaire who migrated to Monaco to avoid paying taxes, but was trying to get UK taxpayer money to enable his stadium project, saying this. Using ‘colonised’ when actual British colonialism resulted in over 100 million Indian deaths between 1881-1920 alone, transportation of 3.5 million African slaves, and an endless array of other atrocities with the impact still being felt today. And when the success of Manchester United, on the field and commercially, is in large part dependent on foreigners. Vile, vile, vile.

@Ankaman616 Would be worried Cunha wouldn’t get stuck into the defensive part enough, but I do feel he could progress us up the pitch a bit and give an outlet when defending deep.

Arsenal the more dominant team in the first half, but a 1-1 score at the whistle that will leave United feeling greater satisfaction. What next for Carrick? A possible Cunha for Dorgu sub to mix things up? Introducing Sesko?

Doing a talk at the end of the month in Shoreditch. It’s about how the obsession with “taste”, AI, tooling, the role of designers and “shipping things” is the wrong conversation. When everything references everything else and is fed to a robot, our systems collapse towards the safest possible middle and everything looks the same. Great work doesn’t come from software or prompts. It comes from taking risks, from courage and intention. At @metalab for 20 years we’ve created an environment where people feel they can take those risks, sit with ambiguity and go beyond that average middle. We need to get weird again before design eats itself. eventbrite.co.uk/e/interface-fe…

Also, this is far worse on the club leadership than on the manager. Everything about Amorim was known before taking the job and the did it anyway, as well as falling out with others on the way (Ashworth) and spending a lot of money. INEOS are Ed Woodward with charisma.

@lauriewhitwell The timing of the subs felt off, but not sure what else he could have done personnel wise to be honest.

Big win for #MUFC. Not pretty. Ground out in second half. Not sure substitutions worked. But committed defensive display for only second clean sheet of season. Up to fifth, at least temporarily.

Who wore it best: ‘should designers code AW25’ or ‘should designers code SS16’?

@Ankaman616 As much as we say the player ‘power’ and dressing room has improved, we still seem each week to have a new story to toss around the sharks. Mainoo’s brother situation will now just be a small note with the Bruno interview.

Not to say the great in-house design stockpile of 2025 is a bad thing for what it’s worth. Everything’s cyclical and for many that’s a good place to be right now!

As much as I dislike the wider part of X, you just don’t get anything like the same level of exposure to debate elsewhere when it comes to design/tech topics (the design vs code thing rn, the CMS vs no CMS) and news (who’s the latest tech co hoovering all the designers up).

@jakedowsmith I have always just said whenever anyone says ‘should designers code’ is that if you love making books books you like to play with paper ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The best designers I know code, not because they're thinking of constraints, but because they understand the possibilities. x.com/karrisaarinen/…
Karri Saarinen@karrisaarinen

Whenever a new design to code tool comes around, people get excited. It’s considered the holy grail of design. You can now design with code. This is the final evolution. But I don’t agree. It’s only the holy grail if you value output higher than the process of design. Whenever a designer becomes more of a builder, some idealism and creativity dies. Not because building is bad, but because you start out including constraints earlier in the process than they should. I’m one that very much thinks design is ultimately what is shipped. But before it shipped, there is a lot of stages that don’t benefit from code or some implementation constraints. In architecture, a lot of the best work is started with sketches and some of the best architects still draw by hand. People forget that the creative process is not about tools. It’s about forming a vision, and then translating that vision into some form. You can use various tools as part of the process, but designers job is really communicating that vision. Once you become the architect and the builder, or the designer and the developer, you start making more conservative bets. You gravitate to what you already know is feasible or supported. You make smaller iterations. You stop dreaming something big. This is not design. Designers, don’t do that. Your job is to imagine the future, and sometimes code and convention gets in the way. Use tools. Understand the domain. Get close to the medium. But don’t lose your greatest strength ability to dream. Work with engineers to realize those dreams. Designing in code is just a path to local maxima and ruin.
