The next Retrotink 4K Pro & CE profiles update is going to be a major one with new cool stuff added like profiles to blend dithering with SNES/SFC and Genesis/MD games. That also includes the Retrotink 4K CE🤠

@OneBitOnePixel Is there a tamagotchi that can be reprogrammed? I’d love to have one just as a clock.

Die photo of the microcontroller from a 2017 Tamagotchi Mini. The ROM image isn't good enough for automatic bit recognition, but since only ~12 kB of the 256 kB ROM is actually used, I think I can extract it entirely by hand.

Before there was the Steam Machine there was the Alienware Hangar 18. An HTPC with an absolutely absurd amount of I/O.

@RobertDaleSmith Awesome. BIOS/UEFI can be set to leave the USB ports powered when the PC is off, that’s common now. Level shifting is easy, for power even a linear regulator on 5v standby power rail would do it. For IO even a voltage divider with resistors would do as this is not a data bus.

Oh that’s a good sign if it is always powered on the machine you want to use. So basically need to make a pico act as the BT dongle instead and add the additional two gpio lines to detect system is on and for toggling it. I was thinking mod about this and may be able to tap the power led as it’s only on when the system is on. So only real tricky part will be making sure voltage levels are properly shifted to not damage the microcontroller. (0-3.3v on pico_w)

1/2 @RobertDaleSmith how hard would it be to make a device that listens to a Bluetooth controller turning on and then by tapping the PC power button send a pulse to turn on the computer using joypadOS?

@RobertDaleSmith Because the Bluetooth adapter I use (8bitdo)handles the wireless side it doesnt mattr if the OS hasnt booted, and it’s always powered even if the PC is off.I cant code it myself but Id be willing to pay if you can add that feature. Im an electronic eng. so I have the hardware side

Prior to the bt device connecting it goes in an advertising state. It would be possible to pair it once and then from that point forward have it detect when that specific device is advertising and rather than connect, flip the computer on and let the computer pair to it. But the controller may give up trying to pair until by time the operating system fully boots. Just have to power it on again.

@RobertDaleSmith I don’t really know how Bluetooth works but my idea would be to bing the device to the game controller’s Bluetooth MAC address without pairing just to listen when the controller is on (if that’s possible) so it can turn on the computer with having to re-pair every time.

@RobertDaleSmith Other methods involve buying an RF relay module but that just adds another remote to the setup.

@RobertDaleSmith Having this device will probably be very attractive for living room gaming PCs as there’s no really good way to turn on the computer using the game controller. Valve solved that with their Steam Machine integrating the wireless receiver to the motherboard.

@RobertDaleSmith Don’t want to deal with how the motherboard handles that. But yeah, I’m yet to see a power button that just doesn’t ground the signal.

@RobertDaleSmith So we could power the device using the standby 5v which is always present despite the computer power state. No data pass through as this device would be intended only to turn on the PC with a controller. And we could use a very small 5v relay for the power button if we…

@lauriewired Gaming was never about being economically efficient. You could apply that theory to your living space. Why not rent a room with shared bathroom/living room/kitchen etc…? A whole apartment for yourself even if it’s just one room is a waste of space. You get the idea.

you’ll get mad at me for saying this…but cloud gaming is so obviously more economically efficient than physical hardware I think it’s going to be the default soon. your home console / pc is idle 90%+ of the day. meanwhile, data centers targets what, 5%, maybe at worst 10% idle. every second a cloud gamer isn’t gaming, that hardware is being used for someone else, training, etc. I think there should be a new measurement, something like cost-per effective FLOP hour that takes into account the TCO + effective utilization. If a gamer spends $500 on a GPU, uses it for 3 years, but it’s only fully active ~5% of that period…the cost-per relative FLOP hour is crazy high! Meanwhile, a $50,000 datacenter GPU might have a *LOWER* cost-per FLOP hour just because the effective utilization is 90+%.

@carygolomb Is it a good game? I don’t really want to buy another game just because is cheap if it’s not worth playing it when there’s great games out there.
