@QiaochuYuan the claim that ethics and consciousness are totally unrelated seems wrong. it is ok to "mistreat" things with no consciousness like rocks or sticks. so "are llms conscious" ~ "should we consider them moral agents"

i think “are LLMs conscious?” is almost completely the wrong question. consciousness is not interesting and does not matter. the question that has teeth is “what does it mean to treat LLMs ethically?” which doesn’t depend on “consciousness” whatsoever

@AviSchiffmann this but i'd like to extend it to other species. what is being a member of an orca pod like? what is it like to have a nest on top of a mountain like an eagle? what kind of comfort does a bear feel when it settles in for hibernation?

whenever I see something aesthetically beautiful or have a crazy experience, it always makes me think about what wild sights other humans throughout history have seen. what would sneaking out of the castle in the fog at night on horseback during the Siege of Vienna look like? Or the jokes friends in a group of 400 oarsmen in an ancient galley. I'm sure we'll be able to simulate these experiences one day & it will be awesome

Day 10 Out of 100 following the orders of an A.I. I created. The first 10 days were WILD. Giggle (my A.I.) was stuck on a loop, telling me to exercise every single day until my body was a shadow of its former self. And the reason behind it was pretty revealing! If you’re new here, here's quick recap: I’m spending 100 days wearing custom A.I. glasses designed to help me find happiness. I took the open-source Frame Glasses by @brilliantlabsAR & created an A.I. that knows everything about my life. It records my actions through an integrated camera, extrapolates my habits over time & uses its knowledge of my life to give me daily orders designed to maximize long term happiness. It's basically a personal A.I. overlord designed to make me happy. Which brings us to the first 10 days! This exercise order loop was the closest thing I’ve experienced to living hell.  I’ve always avoided exercise my entire life, so being commanded to do things like "100 push ups" is something I was NOT ready for. How do you do 100 push ups when you can’t even do 1? The answer is that you take your time. I worked through my orders one by one (sometimes taking hours to do what some people can do in 15 minutes) and I got them done however I could. (Except one telling me to do 100 pull ups. No amount of breaks could get me to go through that one). And 2 weeks in, I feel so much better! My mood has improved tangibly and the amount of new energy I have is insane. I’ve even been having a hard time sleeping because of it. I always knew this could happen, but experiencing it for the first time is pretty awesome. At the end of the day, the best way to start any happiness journey is by taking better care of yourself. So make sure you're doing that too :) I sure am because of my silly little robot. But answering that mystery: why was it telling me to exercise over and over again? It was 100% a flaw in my A.I.'s design. Because I spend most of my time indoors, almost all of the POV photos my A.I. has show me working from home. So naturally, every day it reaches the natural conclusion that the best thing I could possibly do to maximize happiness is go outside and exercise - which isn’t WRONG per se, but would make for a pretty boring 100 day series. However, the fact all the orders in days 1-10 were focused around exercise made telling this story a lot easier! So from now on I'll be doing weekly themes! I’m changing the prompting of my A.I. so it picks a unique theme every week and all the orders must surround that subject. Also, themes cannot be repeated! This should stop the A.I. from being stuck in a loop telling me to exercise until the end of time. Thanks for reading. @mm03993418 @ItaiYanai You can gain praise and respect without engaging in a deeply biased and financially exclusionary club. Good work happens everywhere and so many are rarely get attention for it. Big diff between saint and sane.

Controversial opinion: while it’s popular to say we don’t need the glam journals, scientists aspire for recognition, like an actor aspires for an Oscar and a musician aspires for a Grammy. If Nature/Science/Cell is taken away, we would need some other way to recognise good work.

@ATinyGreenCell @ItaiYanai Recognizing good work is important!! I dislike the journals as much as the next guy but expecting scientists to be saints who don’t want praise is unrealistic

@ItaiYanai Why would any sane civilization let ego get in the way of progress? If you use public funds you work for the benefit of humanity, not to stroke your self-esteem. You think good science doesn't happen in labs that cant afford $10K APC's? Disappointing take, tbh. :/

@ATinyGreenCell Formal training might have accelerated but it seems quite a bit slower than necessary? Maybe there’s another way to get people up the learning curve much faster, something more like an apprenticeship model

I wonder where my life would be if I had been able to stay in school and study toward a PhD. Would I have loved flowers as much? Would I still dream of being a flower designer? My only regret is time. It took so long to get here; surely formal training would have accelerated
