I think one of the hardest things for men of my generation, especially if we are husbands and fathers, is asking for and accepting help when we are vulnerable. Its been a very humbling week.

19 years ago I bought Stubs from Sue and her caveat was to keep it family owned and keep it Stubs. After a million good days and a few awful today is my last day of service. When looking for new owners I had the same caveats as Sue with one addition they had to be Gopher Fans. I found the perfect group and after being closed for a week or so for some minor changes they’ll open up and start a great new chapter at Stubs. To all the staff that worked at Stubs the past 19 years I can’t thank you enough. Without your labor and support there is no Stubs. To all the customers and Gopher fans and everyone else thanks so much for coming in and being a part of our weird little world on Oak and Washington.

2003 McKenzie-Mueller Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Still remarkably youthful for a 2003. The nose opened with vibrant blackcurrant, cassis, and dark cherry layered over cedar, graphite, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, the wine showed impressive energy and structure, with polished tannins framing dense fruit rather than drying it out. What stood out most was the freshness — the fruit remained vivid and primary, giving the wine a sense of longevity and confidence. The finish carried classic Napa richness balanced by restraint and persistence. A wine that felt very much alive and still evolving. 2002 Diamond Creek “Red Rock Terrace” Cabernet Sauvignon Initially somewhat muted and flat right out of the bottle, showing little of the depth expected from the site. With air, however, the wine transformed dramatically over the course of an hour. The bouquet deepened into volcanic earth, crushed rock, black plum, and dried herbs, while the palate gained both dimension and lift. The signature Red Rock Terrace minerality eventually emerged, bringing tension and complexity to the ripe fruit core. Once fully open, it became layered, expressive, and compelling — a reminder of how rewarding patience can be with mature Diamond Creek. 2008 Anthonij Rupert Distinctly South African in personality, yet with a decidedly French sensibility in structure and presentation. Aromatically, it carried savory notes of dried herbs, graphite, earth, and restrained dark fruit rather than overt sweetness or opulence. The palate leaned old-world: composed, structured, and elegant, with fine tannins and a measured, almost Bordeaux-like austerity. There was a rustic sophistication to the wine — less about power and more about nuance, texture, and savory complexity. A thoughtful and character-driven bottle. 1999 Merryvale “Profile” Red Wine, Napa Valley Started impressively youthful and energetic, showing polished dark fruit, mocha, and cedar with a supple Napa richness. Early pours suggested plenty of life remaining, with attractive balance between maturity and freshness. However, the wine faded relatively quickly in the glass, losing fruit intensity and structural definition as the evening progressed. What began as vibrant and composed gradually softened into a more diffuse expression, suggesting a wine at or just past its plateau. Still enjoyable, but best appreciated shortly after opening.
