The center of mass is what determines the direction an object will move. That’s why “up” and “down” change.

@benwehrman When I was a kid growing up on the south shore of Lake Ontario, I could see the tops of the tall buildings in Toronto Canada, but not the bottoms or shore line. Why is that? If earth were flat, I should have been able to see the shore line.
