Most problems in taxi & private hire licensing aren’t caused by bad intent. They’re caused by fragmented processes and missed reminders. Our latest paper on why simple digital tools matter: 👉 mobilityexchange.co/2026/01/buildi…

This is precisely why a stringently regulated industry - one with mandated disability provisions and strict compliance duties - was never meant to compete in a so-called free market. Add a predatorily opaque pricing model into the mix, it’s no surprise that licensed taxi fleets are struggling. But then again, we were talking about this a decade ago.

Taxi numbers aren't reducing because of the cost of accessible vehicles, it's structural: Mobility-Exchange_The-great-displacement-protecting-taxis-requires-structural-reform-not-nostalgia_ME_Oct-2025.pdf mobilityexchange.co/wp-content/upl…

New from Mobility Exchange: taxis are being displaced by structural design, not nostalgia. PHVs grow while taxi numbers stay flat, and Tier 1 public service mobility like SEND and NEPTS is not connected to the vehicles best suited to deliver it. (1/2)

This TPH notice was issued following complaints from a certain PH app company that the, very few, taxi drivers on its app, are being identified and abused on SM. Any member who receives any communication from TPH on this should contact us before responding! content.tfl.gov.uk/05-25-tph-noti…

MAXiCab Accessibility youtu.be/Ybb1c1-3Zkg?si… Wouldn’t it be great if London cab drivers were able to provide the same safety standards for all wheelchair users like they can in other cities where alternative taxis are available that offer greater levels of accessibility? London cabbies are amongst the best in the world, but they can only work with what’s available to them. What’s more important - the safety of a passenger with a disability or being able to turn in 28’? #ChooseChange 🌱#TransportEquity ♿️

@londontaxi_pr Absolutely. No criticism of your approach at all, just some thoughts on how we might address the decline. Seems likely numbers will continue to drop before stabilising.

@MobilityXchange Indeed, but we LTPR can only do so much. Its down to others orgs Tfl to identify the merit of the job & hopefully underlining the longevity. But by the same token they should be supporting what we do. Apart from vocal from Tfl, support from LCDC, that isn't the case with others

The question needed to be asked, but the answer is unequivocally yes. Especially given the diminishing driver numbers. What's disappointing is the lack of support & coverage for those who are trying to promote & encourage its continuation & new blood into the profession.

@londontaxi_pr If you’re 18 now, thinking of 3 years study to get a badge at 21, you want to be sure that you’ve got a job for as long as you want it. Then the investment makes sense.

@londontaxi_pr Flexibility is a huge part of why people do it but these days there are lots of flexible roles. Doesn’t really differentiate enough from PHV either. The risks are still there and misunderstood (AV’s, security etc). People need to be shown beyond that to how the job will survive.

@TheLTDA @guidoacasa @spkenny67 Fair shout but it doesn’t follow that this then rules out motorisation and the trade should be realistic about that prospect. Not saying it causes huge issues but a properly regulated plying for hire service could be popular for many short journeys.

@MobilityXchange @guidoacasa @spkenny67 Sensible, and only, for safety purposes, thing to do, is for TfL to require any vehicle licensed meets crash test safety requirements, same as they do with all Taxis, PHVs, trains etc.
