I think its a good sign that in his very first week on the job the new UN Envoy for Sudan made his first visit directly to Khartoum, not Washington, Brussels, Abu Dhabi or Addis. While the role of gold in financing Sudan's war has been well documented, there is another resource—"the golden tears of Africa," or gum arabic—that has played a key role in fuelling the ongoing conflict.
