I've started a new job as a postdoctoral research fellow at the AlAl Network, which is a joint initiative between Emory University and Georgia Tech. Such a great space to be in as I’m writing my book - Automating Law: Locating (In)Justice and the Industrialization of Legal Reason

This is a war I don’t want to see. As I came here, I saw people being brought in rikshas, with bullet wounds, ambulances coming in one after another with corpses. I just stood and watched. They are not related to me but my heart is breaking. #StepDownHasina #Bangladesh #murderer

🧵/1 NEW: Before they descended on protesting students, some Awami League supporters in Bangladesh took to Facebook, urging “burst firing” at the demonstrators, crushing them like insects, hacking them to death, and even burying them alive. netra.news/2024/violent-t…

As of 8 pm Bangladesh time (3pm UK time), the following news from journalists in Bangladesh about the student protests: - According to a list at the emergency wards of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (seen by journalists) at least 19 people were killed today, bringing the total confirmed death toll of student protestors/bystanders since Monday at the hands of law enforcement authorities (according to reporters) to 64; - significant escalation of violence following Friday prayers, including protestors attacking police officers, and in the district town of Narsingdi, protestors stormed the jail resulting in the freeing of hundreds of prisoners ; - Obaidul Quader, a minister and senior governing Awami League leader has been quoted as saying that the security forces must be tough against the protestors. (tThe Bangladesh government has since yesterday cut all internet within the country making the reporting of news extremely difficult)

Bangladesh students are facing brutality and violence for protesting against a corrupt education system. How ironic when it was student movements that led to Bangla being our national language, Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, and so many significant moments in East Bengal.

Unverified sources have sent these footage of tonight's events in Dhaka. According to the sources, severe violent clashes are taking place between students and security forces. A large number of civilians have also joined the students. The number of casualties is currently unknown, but according to the source, there are bodies on the street. #PrayForBangladesh

"The EU is deeply concerned by the violence and tragic loss of life that has occurred in the context of the protests in Bangladesh. It is vital that further violence is averted and that a peaceful resolution to the situation is found as swiftly as possible, underpinned by the rule of law and democratic freedoms." eeas.europa.eu/eeas/banglades…

Here's an update from Dhaka, Bangladesh by @AFP bureau chief Shafiqul Alam. "1. Fresh violence has reportedly flared up in Dhaka's Mohammadpur and Badda. Police have used tear gas. 2. The Students Against Discrimination, the group behind the protests, have asked people to pray for the departed souls today. 3. BNP has called protests after 3pm today. 4. At least 32 people were killed yesterday, most hit by barrage of rubber bullets. Hundreds were injured, many hit by rubber bullets in their eyes. Most of the death were in Uttara where hospitals were overwhelmed. 5. Internet -- both Broadband wifi and mobile -- are still shut. People are gripped with uncertainty 6. Protests took place in dozens of district towns. Most saw clashes between protesters and police and ruling party student activists. 7. Dhaka's streets are eerily empty. This morning I went to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and along the way found only several motorcyles and rickshaws. 8. Some 280 injured were treated at DMCH and hundreds were treated in hospitals in Uttara. 9. Police have urged calm and said they have so far shown maximum restraint."

It's been 8 long hours since Bangladesh, a country of 170 million, has been out of communication with the rest of the world. The authorities in Bangladesh shut down the cellular network and internet service across the entire country following violent clashes between security forces and students. The students have been demanding reforms to a controversial quota system that gives advantages in job placements to family members of freedom fighters. Thirty-two people, mostly young students, have lost their lives and the number of death is likely to increase. This disturbing video from Dhaka exemplifies the police brutality in Bangladesh. Shykh Yamin, a computer science student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology, was dragged inside a police APC from the protest. He was shot and then his body was tossed onto the road. Do you see any regard for human life in this video? Yamin was still alive when the cops tossed him onto the road; he later died from his injuries.

Drawing your attention to spread word of what is happening in Bangladesh right now. In the last two days the Hasina government deployed police and its party goons to attack peaceful student protestors demanding reformation of the oppressive quota system #SaveBangladeshiStudents
