Today, the Supreme Court has dealt a devastating new blow to the Voting Rights Act and against the sacred right to vote.

The consequences will be felt across the country: fewer voices heard, fewer communities represented and a democracy diminished.   Congress must urgently pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the full strength of the Voting Rights Act before this latest blow becomes fatal.

My father was given a pocket Bible to carry in Vietnam. On January 23, near Saigon, his jeep hit a land mine. Shrapnel tore into his face and legs, but the Bible in his breast pocket stopped the shrapnel from reaching his heart. The hole from the shrapnel ended on 1 Corinthians 15. “Death is swallowed up in victory.”🙏 Gen. Mace, a remarkable man, a remarkable life.

My daughter Katie should be here. She was killed in a tragedy that should not have happened—by someone who had already been deported and should not have been here. I’m often told not to “politicize” it. But many of the same voices speak quickly and forcefully about complex situations involving ICE or law enforcement, sometimes before all the facts are known. Supporters of open borders and sanctuary city and state policies don’t always see that as politicization. It can feel like compassion and concern are applied unevenly. I’m not trying to politicize anything. I’m asking for accountability. When policy shapes real-world outcomes, it’s reasonable to ask hard questions. Katie deserved better.
