Even Brahmins (Iyers) are below them, with only a ritualistic respect given to the latter. They practiced Yazhpanam murai, not Brahminism.

Palakkad Iyers or Nellore Pattapus aren't historically found in TN. That doesn't mean they are originally Malayalis or Telugus.

Even in Karnataka itself, where they also achieved to politically mingle with Mysore politics, many people don't recognize them as Kannadigas. They are Andhraite migrants who subsequently adopted Kannada language. Same phenomenon in TN.
