BREAKING: All 55 passengers and crew are safe after a passenger plane overran the runway at Mogadishu’s international airport, Tuesday. The aircraft, a Fokker 50 owned by the local company StarSky, had earlier reported technical problems shortly after taking off from Mogadishu and was en route to Galkayo. The plane was cleared to land, but amid the panic it went over a cliff and fell onto the shoreline.

#MOGADISHU: Understanding climate justice requires equal responsibility and equal recognition of impact. Somalia contributes very little to global emissions, yet it faces some of the world’s most severe climate impacts. But are we making climate reporting accessible to local communities—whose daily struggles are about the right to life and security, and the right to food and water? #ClimateJustice #MediaTraining #HumanRights #Somalia #Somaliland

Climate reporting is about people, rights, and survival. We concluded a two-day journalistic training on climate change reporting for @sjs_Somalia network of reporters in #Somalia. The program strengthened journalists’ capacity to report on climate justice, ensuring that climate stories are not only told by informed reporters, but also reach communities who depend on accurate information to make critical decisions about their lives and livelihoods.

🚨Critical Somali Bantu journalist beaten, arrested with his wife, and falsely accused of illegitimate marriage in Hirshabelle State Sharif Shuriye Hashi, a 35-year-old reporter for Universal Somali TV, was arrested from his home in Jowhar on 8 December by #Hirshabelle State police officers. According to local journalists, the arrest was led by Hassan Jabshe, Deputy Commander of the Jowhar Police Station. Sharif’s newly wedded wife, Hamdi Muse Digow, also 35, was arrested on the same day. On Saturday, 13 December, police brought Sharif and his wife before the Jowhar District Court, alleging that their marriage—conducted in September 2025—was “illegitimate.”, according to a report by the local media. Both remain in police custody. @sjs_Somalia strongly condemns the unlawful arrest, abuse, and continued detention of journalist Sharif Shuriye Hashi and his wife Hamdi Muse Digow. Their detention represents a blatant abuse of power, driven by discrimination and intimidation rather than the rule of law. We call for their immediate and unconditional release and for an end to these unfounded court proceedings, which are being used as a tool to harass and silence a journalist for his work. sjsyndicate.org/2025/12/14/cri…

We are very pleased to have met with Netherlands Human Rights @wjpgeerts during the human rights tulip awards in the Hague last night. Ambassador Wim Geerts made it clear that justice and peace can only be achieved when there is a respect for human rights. @NetherlandsMoFA @NLinSomalia

THREE years ago, @sjs_Somalia SG @Cabdalleaxmed was in an enemy court in Mogadishu, Somalia capital. He was kidnapped, tortured, put on trial in inhumane court. Our office was raided and our colleagues terrorised just because we, at SJS, advocate for media freedom and human rights. However, three years later, last night Mr. Mumin stood at the chambers of the International Court of Justice #ICJ at the Hague, where he received the local Human Rights Tulip Award presented to @sjs_Somalia. Our resilience is born from the belief that truth and human dignity are worth defending—no matter the cost. Even when we were silenced, targeted, and dragged into hostile courts, we refused to surrender our mission. THANK YOU NETHERLANDS 🇳🇱 @CPJAfrica @moibrahimi @NLinSomalia @AmnestyEARO

Media is vital for democracy-building in post-conflict countries like Somalia because it plays several essential roles that help stabilize society, empower citizens, and hold power to account. At The Hague, @sjs_Somalia joins other journalists and human rights defenders in a discussion on free society and democratic institutions and the role of civil society groups. We are thankful for the engagement with the Netherlands Institute for Multi-party Democracy.
